They'd have to be separate from the regulars - they regard themselves as too elite and don't want yobs in the forces - but yes, it would otherwise be an excellent idea ! ! !

I agree 2yrs national service for everyone but i dont agree on mixing them with the regulars. They should do their national service as a community service run by members of our forces who would enforce discipline, something that today seems sadly missing. The problem we have is these yobs are getting younger and national service would be of no use. I say bring back discipline in schools, Im not suggesting measures like the cane but teachers need to be able to chastise and punish a child without fear of reprisals. Im of an age where discipline was used in schools and as far as im aware it never did me or my peers any harm.

I am an ex RAF regular who missed National Service by only a few years.

Our three armed forces are extremely professional people, the reason I say that is because I joined up when the National Service people were just finishing, and saddly, and with great respect to most of them, the regulars were glad to see them go.

This is not to say that National Service did not do THEM any good, it certainly did, but there is no place for them in today's modern services.

Community service, on the other hand would be a great thing , and would help instill a sense of discipline and community spirit in today's youth.

It is a sad fact that if you mention one of Hitler's ideas, a lot of people throw their arms up in horror, but one of his better ideas was just that, helping the community.

Better of with a tightly controlled community service than sticking these disaffected youngsters in the British Army, where they are most definitely not wanted. Ask anyone in the services what they think and i am sure you will get a similar message.

For those that say yes bring it back, probably aren't old enough to know why we had it in the first place, and I have spoken to many military people who most definitely don't want these people dumped on them. Bad Lads Army was a joke.

In no way would that be helpful. In order to sort out the whole yob culture and crime in general, all we need to do is put more effort into the punishment. People steel, fight and cause damage because there is a pathetic fine as punishment. Make the punishments more severe and I guarantee that less people break the law because they are bored.

I would like to see 2 years of national service for everyone with the following caveats:

Not everyone will serve in the military... some will serve in civilian capacities... hospitals & other forms of community service.

Concientous Objectors need to be protected and not abused. and there will be some CO's.

If deferments are allowed to pursue one's education then national service will be assessed when the education is complete.

No one is truely exempt. [with the exception of CO's]

No....the armed forces are far more professional than they used to be in the 1950's so there is more to it than just square bashing, so no National service is not the answer.....believe it or not, not all youth are yobs, its just that the lunatics get all the publicity...there have always been yobs and there always will be.....they should be locked up and thats that.....

Yes, and it should be in the form of military service to the country.

Each citizen should be given the opportunity to either serve, or not serve, two years in the military.

Those who choose to serve earn the privilege to vote. Those who do not serve cannot vote.

yes. My father was probably the last generation to do national service. I would teach young men discipline and manners, something that is sadly lacking in schools today

Yes, National Service should be brought back or something that can turn our young males into proper men - gentlemen. They are a dying breed.
