In the announcements section of the newspaper. (Local with the groom) Your picture will go in once(either on engagement or wedding). It used to be that some newspapers would comp this, but no more. This will initiate a whole bunch of mail and solicitations. That is why the others said don't. No time to be cheap about it, the costs are just starting. If you think $50 is too much, get out now.

It was never important/necessary. It was nice, but even when I got married 22 1/2 years ago, people didn't do it all that much. Obviously, people still do it, because where else would Jay Leno get his funny married couple's names for his Headlines bit? ;) I know many newspapers charge for this service now, which may be why more and more couples are opting to forgo it. I would check with your newspaper if you want to run an announcement in the paper. You'll have better luck with it being free or inexpensive if you stick with your small, local paper. Large metropolitan papers are probably going to charge. Congrats and good luck!

Besides the newspaper, you can post your engagement in your college or high school newsletter if you have such a thing or in the bulletin of your religious organization. I'm not sure of anyplace in particular online, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's something out there somewhere. Congrats!

Why not create a wedding website and then email everyone to visit it? You can start just be having an 'announcement page' and then add wedding details over time. That way you can put as many pictures and as much text as you want! We used http://www.momentville.com for ours - its free. There are other options to (ewedding, com, weddingwindow.com) but I used momentville and would recommend them.

The local newspaper where your folks live and the one where her folks live in the announcement section - and then if you want to go one more in a national newspaper.
Congratulations and good luck
