well i dont believe anthing can be added to the bible..it's alread written..but i do believe there can be and are other books of scripture other than the Bible alone that testify of Jesus Christ. After all the Lord himself has said that:

"in the mouths of two or three witnesses will i establish all my words"

therefore if the Bible is one witness of Christ surely the Lord will provide other witnesses in keeping with his word.

as for if i will believe someone if they sa they have written new scripture i would have to reconcile it with two standards:

#1 do its teachings complimet the teachings of the Bible?
and
#2 when i read and pray about it to know if its true does the Spirit of God bear witness of its truthfulness?

thats just a simple litmus test I believe one can use to see if something is of God or if it comes from the other direction

The choice of books that went into the bible was made by Pope Damasus I, although no one has a copy of the list from him personally. His successor, Innocent I, also provided the same list and it is from him we have the list we have today.

It is important to realize that the creation of a library, which is what bible means, of books to be read in church, was not intended to be what it is used for today.

Synods at Hippo Regius, Rome, and Carthage met to determine which books should be included. A copy of the DECRETUM GELASIANUM DE LIBRIS RECIPIENDIS ET NON RECIPIENDIS can be found at http://www.tertullian.org/decretum_eng.htm

Most people think somehow the books either were just handed down, or came into existence, or everyone just knew what they were.

To be in the bible, they must be part of what is called the "apostolic tradition." The Catholic and Orthodox Church purposefully preserve all things handed down by the apostles, which include artwork (Luke painted), songs, stories (including the bible), services, practices and beliefs. A book could not be added because to be included it must be part of what was handed down by the apostles to their successors (see Acts 2 on the ordination of Mathias --Catholic and Orthodox bishops can trace their personal ordination back to an apostle through the apostolic succession mechanism described for Mathias). Further, we have the writings of a few of the immediate successors, people trained by the apostles, ordained by the apostles and who were successors to them.

So I would neither believe nor question the person as no one has the authority to alter the list, not even a pope of Rome. One of the rules of Catholic and Orthodox thought is that no one, not even the pope or the pope and the bishops together have the authority to change the rules.

That is why Luther, when he rejected papal authority, found he had to pick the books all over again and he excluded books that disagreed with him...namely the books Protestants now call the Apocrypha and also James, Jude and Revelations which were put back in due to a revolt forming within the Reformation.

I suggest reading the decree that created the bible. It is the sole authorizing document. That is why the KJV is called the "authorized version." Protestants needed someone to authorize an alternative. Since, using the logic of the divine right of kings, James was the King and according to official theology of England, the head of the Church, he possessed the authority to authorize and determine what should be in the bible.

Of course, for Americans that creates a problem since the Revolution broke with that social compact and rejected the divine right of the English Kings. Using the logic of the authorized version, either all Americans are damned (anathematized) for breaking with God's chosen King or alternatively, the King James Version is against God.

History has a lot of interesting logical quirks in it.

Read the decretal, it is not very long.

There are many more books and/or letters that could have been put in the Bible they are in the Vatican archives and can be accessed. When it was compiled they could have made it twice as large but the object was to give a history of the events that occurred without repetition. (History of the covenant, Jesus and the early Christian community)
There is nothing more to add.
I think it was Joseph Smith that tried to add on to the Bible. The Mormons have their book of Mormon an addition, or extention, of the Bible with a story of angels on earth obviously some people do believe it, but I don't.

The Mormons tried this, the cannon is set, you have to start a new religious sect, to make amendments.

By the way MG - The Dewey - Catholic version of the bible is an older version than the King James, which I guess you follow?

And Dogmadell, the KJ is a translation of the Catholic text, in older English to upset the Lutherian translations hitting England in the Stewart period.

The Bible is exceedingly clear and complete. If anyone believes that it is incomplete, it is because they have not read it. There will be two witnesses to come, sent by God to prophesy in the final days. Both Daniel and John were given scrolls (words) to "eat" (another term for knowing/learning something; used commonly in the Bible) that were to be sealed up till the appointed time. When they return to prophesy, they will be unmistakable as they will have the power to perform miracles and will be killed by the anti-Christ. Their bodies will be left in the streets and everyone will see them (something that was not possible till today because of the Internet). After the three days, they will arise and ascend into heaven. This will be proof that they were from God. The Bible is about praising God and His Son, Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, who died for the sins of the world. Anyone who claims to be from or of God will be concerned only with this and nothing else. The test will be extremely simple so stop worrying.

I would act as the Devils advocate.

Ask if the person was addressed by God.

If addressed by God, ask what God looked like. If they describe his countenance then they have not spoken to God because they are still living. "No man can look upon the face of the Lord and live".

If the book was inspiration only, then I would say probably not.

You would be surprised at what's written in some of the books (gospels) that were intentionally left out of the Bible. For instance in the Gospel of Thomas : "Salvation comes from knowledge, not by the death and resurrection of Jesus". "When you know yourself, you become knowledge and you realize that you are sons of the living father". "If you don't know yourself, you live in poverty and become that poverty". Thomas was Jesus half-brother because Joseph was a widower when he married Mary and had children from a prior marriage.

The day of direct revelation has ended with the completion of the Bible. Throughout the Bible it instructs writers to write - but in the last book in the last chapter we are told that nothing should be added or taken away.

Revelation 22:18-19
"For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book."

Edited: Men and their personalities were used like a writing implement to write the 66 books of the Bible. The Bible is a completely inspired book (viz. literally "God breathed" - see 2 Tim 3:16) and reveal perfect truth in the original languages. We are told in Psalm 12:6-7:

"The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever."

And in Isaiah 40:8:
"the grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever"

I thank God that I don't have to run to a fro wondering if I am missing some book or writing or vision that would complete my faith. God has graciously put the Bible together and have preserved it through all generations. Evil man have sought to add their own works - but Jesus promised that "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me"
