She didn't even name the bear, she just allowed her pupils to name it.

It's barbaric.

The children named the teddy bear Mohammed, not the teacher.
I believe about 20 out of 23 children wanted the name.
Children name their toys after things that are meaningful to them, things they like. Not things they hate.
Thus the name of the teddy is term of endearment to these children. Neither they, nor the teacher, meant it as any kind of a slur.
The teacher was in Sudan to help the people there - now look how grateful the authorities are.

EDIT: I've just read the link to the BBC report that someone posted, and noticed this quote:
"It is seen as an insult to Islam to attempt to make an image of the Prophet Muhammad".
If this is so, then why are Muslim parents allowed to name their sons Muhammed/Mohamed?

this part of my answer is an aside ... of course the story originates in England (well, the woman accused is English too). Khartoum is where Gordon and his force were annihilated and it remains a dreadful national memory in the UK.

The Sudan is in the midst of a dreadful civil war caused by racism and religion. Perpetrators of the worst crimes against humanity in the region are radical fundamentalist Moslems. They are quite similar to the madmen of the Khmer Rouge - but also the radical Millenial Apocalyptics, a strange and bizarre cult of Christians who wanted to bring about the destruction of the world by starting a war in israel. These nuts, by the way, have the ear of the Bush Regime.

Frankly, the accusation levied against this woman reflects the narrow-minded ignorance and twisted interpretation of Islam by very, very bigoted people in Khartoum. They are applying an Islamic law that forbids making images of the Prophet, as well as claiming that naming a teddy bear after him is disrespectful. As their regime is draconian and repressive, the sentence reflects a desire to make a bitter example of this insolent (to them) foreigner and unbeliever.

Overall, Islam is neither better nor worse than extreme fundamentalist Christianity or ultra-orthodox militant Judaism. Atrocities are perpetrated daily by all of those radicals.

Karl Marx was wrong about a lot of things, but his observation that "Religion is the opiate of the masses" was and is dead on. Religion is also the root of terrible injustice and inhumanity.

Another reason why church and state should be separate and religious laws are ridiculous. Inhuman? Yes. Women should have the same rights as men in all cultures.

I am for it, but not for the teacher:

The kids wanted the bear to be named Mohammed so they should get 40 lashes each...

The fact of the matter is this:
Religion is once again being used to widen the rift between groups of stupid people (east and west).

God/Allah is more than capable of being able to handle such a trivial matter - What they should do is ask Allah if all concerned should be Whipped, if they receive no answer - everyone in Sudan should be Whipped, if they do receive an answer - do whatever is asked...

As a renowned and respected atheist said: "Religion poisons EVERYTHING."

But hey, if you don't like the rules or don't wish to follow them, go somewhere else, far far away from wherever religious fundamentalism is the norm, whether it be Islamic, Christian, Judaism, etc. If you don't you'll be in for a lot of grief.

Their despicable laws violate the International Human Rights Act that guarantees a human being's right to be treated with dignity and kindness. If they continue to whip the skin on people's backs into hamburg, they are going to have the whole world in an uproar against them.

Lashes are barbaric. Jail time is adequate enough. Although THIS new "offense" defies common sense.

it's freaking unreal...i just answered a question from someone who claims that the west is immoral.

how moral is it to arrest someone for naming a teddy bear? did they warn her that she was not allowed to ever use the name? has no one else in recent history been named mohammad?

i really don't understand that.

Let's just hope that with the increase in the Muslim population in this country this is not a sign of things to come!
