Best Language In India

Depends where you are in India. In the North Hindi is the prevalent language, though Gujerati (in Gujerat and around Bombay), Punjabi (in Punjab and also widely in Pakistan) and Bengali (in West Bengal and also in Bangla Desh) all have millions of native speakers.

In the South of India they speak predominantly Dravidian languages (Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, etc) which are unrelated to the languages of the North and not easy for foreigners to master.

English is, however, widely spoken everywhere, especially in the large towns and cities.

I think English would do just fine anywhere in the urban and semi-urban pockets of India:South or North. But, to interlace yourself with the people, Hindi in the north and Telugu in the south are advisible.

Hindi is the mother tongue of 41% percent of Indians, mostly in the central north. It also works fairly well in Punjab, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Paschimbanga and Odisha.

Telugu is India's third most spoken language and first in the south. It is spoken mainly in 2 out of the 5 South Indian states, namely Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Telugus constitute the second highest majority in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka after the native languages of those states, nearly 10% in each. It is also spoken in Southern Odisha and Chattisgarh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Telugu is often described as the easiest among the 4 south Indian languages to learn as most of its words end in vowel sounds and sound sweet. Telugu is hence, renowned as "The Italian of the east". A similar feature, to some extent is found in Kannada. Telugu's influence on carnatic music, the predominant form of music in South India and Telugu cinema has made it understandable across South India. You can find significant number people of Telugu origin across Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Telugu has a vast vocabulary. For every word of other languages there are multiple pure telugu words and a word of slightly modified Sanskrit, any one of them is accepted. This makes learning Hindi, Kannada and Bengali and Odiya also easy, as they are also influenced by Sanskrit quiet significantly.

Oldest Indian language: Sanskrit
Oldest surviving Indian language: Tamil (Inscriptions from 200 BC found)
2nd oldest surviving Indian language: Telugu (Earliest specific evidences of 1st century BC. Excavations in Bhattiprolu traced backed to 300 BC are under research, suspected to have primitive Telugu language inscriptions. According to the Russian linguist Andronov, Telugu was split from Proto-Dravidian languages between 1500–1000 BC).
