if his unit getting ready for a deployment they could have some change in the date or time...or even sometimes when they get ready for a major field problem they'll have a recall...mainly what it means is that people that are on leave or a pass are called back to post...the unit wants everyone back for a reason...just keep in touch with your point of contact from the frg and i'm sure once your husband comes home he can fill you in as much as possible also...

Recalls are a normal part of training, both prior to a deployment and when no deployment is planned.

Basically it's a calling tree initiated by the Commander (Be it Brigade, Battalion, Company, etc...). Through the use of "recall Rosters" a message is passed to every member of the unit in a short period of time. Usually the message is something along the lines of " report to the company with your 'A Bag,' 'B Bag' and Rucksack, but can be simply report to the Company at 0600.

A Recall will usually kick-off a Field Training Exercise (FTX), but can also be used to recall the unit for a 100% urinalysis, or some other reason. A unit may have several recalls in preparation for a deployment, but for Quick Reation Forces (QRF) units such as the 82nd Airborne Division it could be for an unannounced deployment (think Saudi Arabia in 1990, or Granada in 1985). Heavy units (such as at Fort Hood) almost always have plenty of warning prior to a deployment because of the logistics involved in moving Trucks, Tanks, Strykers, etc...

In short, a recall is a normal part of Army life and unless the Commander of your husband's unit, or the Family Readiness Group (FRG) give you other information, they is nothing to worry about.

Welcome to the Army Family!

PLEASE don't listen to everyone telling you they are leaving soon and you won't ever see him again! IT"S NOT TRUE! A recall just means they are taking accountability for everyone in the unit - those on pass or leave must come back to the unit and show their faces. Everyone in the unit must. Very often troops are put on 2 hr recall - meaning they can not travel further than two hours from post. IF they do and there actually is a recall formation there can be serious repercussions.
Often this is because somebody pulled something stupid, a holiday, accountability for field time, or just to see how fast everyone responds. It IS training for emergency's should they arise or for deployment but it doesn't mean they are deploying NOW! They can NOT deploy without orders which very rarely come 24 hours or less ahead of time unless he is specops which it doesn't sound like he is.... Ft. Hood takes months to mobilize and you WILL know ahead of time.
Deep Breaths! It'll be fine. If the unit does have orders then they are most likely practicing. Hubby needs to get you involved with the FRG, and talk to you about his unit.

Blessings!

Greenman is 100% correct. My husband had recalls where they were simply making sure they had correct contact info for everyone and they would actually get the message in a short period of time. In those cases he was usually only gone a couple of hours. However, a recall could also mean he will be going for much longer. You really just have to wait and see.

Good luck!

It could mean a list of things. All the recalls I have been through have been for things going on on the base (for example: exercises, needing more people to post out for special events.) It could also mean a deployment just popped up and they need people to go now, but if that happened you'll know about it before we all have posted our answers.

Follow Greenmans advice and don't let it get you bothered.

The military likes to mess with the troops, it gives them something to do to fill in the hours.
Example" In the Marine corps, every duty station had the same philosophy regarding landscaping! If it moves, shoot it, if it stands still, paint it!

Lisa, its sounds like some changes may or may not be headed your way. Prayers are as well! stay in touch with your FRG, chaplain, friends and family, they will all be a heaven sent through the following months and years to come. Military life is different, but it is also an awesome extended family ;}Let me add, this could mean nothing at all, your husband will be the one who can best answer all the questions you have He and your FRG are your best contacts! Godspeed and thank you, your family and you husband!

a recall means his unit has been put on alert to deploy in the near immediate future. He could have as little as 24 hours notice. even less.

My first thought is deployment...ask your husband he'll know what it means.

It means that they are forming up and shipping out. Good luck and God's speed for a safe return.
