My mother-in-law from my first marriage was OK but tended to do things she thought would be helpful without asking. This was a source of frustration to both my wife and I, so it didn't cause any problems between us.
My mother-in-law from my second marriage is OK, although she sometimes expects more from my wife than she ought to. Again this doesn't cause any problems because my wife feels the same way.
In-law problems in a relationship usually come about when the child of the person concerned doesn't see things the same way as their partner.

I had a MIL from hell in my first marriage. She never called me by my name, always by my husbands previous girlfriends name! even after years of marriage and 3 children, she continued to do it. Plus when we visited, she would grab my then husbands suitcase and say "I'll just air these clothes for you....." Like I would pack damp clothes for him! My response to these and numerous other insults was to laugh at her. She was a wicked old witch and if I had allowed it, it would really have got me down. No point in giving her the satisfaction eh? Ignore the old bint, they are just not worth it. May she RIP.
