We hoildayed in southern Ireland a few years ago and were impressed by the general attitude to children, like they were welcomed in restaurants, and people were happy to be out with their kids. Hope this helps.

Almost anywhere rural would be a good place to raise a family, and Ireland has lots of small towns. A lot would depend on where you would find work, and what sort of job you will do after you leave the air force. If you can find work in a local town, that would be ideal. We hear traffic reports ever morning about the chaos trying to get into Dublin during the rush hour, so if you can work locally elsewhere, close to where you live, you will have much more time to spend with your family. And the education system here is excellent, an important consideration if you have children.

I haven't come across racism as a problem here, and if you live an ordinary family life like the rest of us, you'll be welcome. There's always room for one more. The only grumblings I have heard is about scroungers who come to milk the system and live off the taxpayers without any notion of doing a day's work themselves. But that's not most people. We have quite a lot of foreigners here now, and they are fine people, living everyday lives alongside the rest of us, and enjoying the same good life we do.

Personally I liked the town of Sixmilebridge. Its a small town with a lot of people your age who have moved their. Houses are very reasonable compared to Ennis and Limerick that are nearby.

You will be two hours from Dublin, An hour from Galway, 30 minutes to Ennis and 15 minutes to Limerick.

The bridge is about 20 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean and has a great lake outside of the town of Kilkisheen about 5 miles.

People know their neighbors and the kids have a great place to play not quite city and not quite country but great.

Lots of shopping in nearby Limerick, Shannon, Ennis
near Shannon Airport only 6 miles away and good schools too,

Hope this helps I have spent some time in Ireland and hope to one day live there or either have a summer place.

Oh and about racism. I am a Black American with Irish Roots and I was never treated as you are black but as an American and that was great. The majority of people are helpful, friendly, I was invited in to many of homes for a cup of tea. You will find some racism but I find it comes mostly from younger people and people not really from Ireland.

It's a great place to live and don't worry about racism or discrimination, there are loads of foreigners and they're getting used to it! As long as you work, you'll have a comfortable lifestyle. I'm not sure about the quality of education though, and it can be very expensive. Healthcare is not the best in Europe either. And the quality of food and the weather might not be the best for children. Have you thought about English speaking countries in the Southern Hemisphere? Australia, New Zealand... I think they would be much better.

Most counties in Ireland are considerable. I'm from Waterford personally so I'm obviously a bit biased. It's in the sunny South East, near the sea, near the mountains, near a city, near beaches, gorgeous coastline, plenty of woods and forests for rambling. Lots for kids to do too, cinema, play areas, etc schools are quite good too and the people are lovely. If you'd like more info please mail me :o)
