every office says it needs data entry skills and make it seem very important and difficult.. which i doubt...

anyway, i've worked at a travel agency entering flight info on computers, i've worked at a store entering product inventory and info into the store computer. is this considered data entry? i saw on an application numeric and alpha numeric..

what does data entry usually entail?

Sweetie don't think so hard! Data entry is just that, "entering data" , into anything eg., computers, files, etc. Alpha-numeric only means... alphabetically (a,b,c order) or numerically (1,2,3 order) logging things into a system. Everyone on this earth who is computer-literate, has experience in data entry. Just spruce it up a bit for a resume' or an application. Good Luck!

As others have said, data entry is just entering data on a pc.
However, the skills a company is looking for can be the type of data entry (alpha-numeric/numeric) or speed.
Most companies look for a minimum 8,000 kph.
Depending on the company, data entry can be very important. At my job data entry plays a significant part in unemployment tax/benefits and child support. Plus, you're under time constraints to get everything done.
It also can be difficult; You're hands and wrists are susceptible to carpal tunnel syndrome.
Your previous job experience will help. Just practice on your speed and you'll be well on your way.
Good luck!

Definition of: data entry

Entering data into the computer, which includes keyboard entry, scanning and voice recognition. When transactions are entered after the fact (batch data entry), they are just stacks of source documents to the keyboard operator.

Deciphering poor handwriting from a source document is a judgment call that is often error prone. In online data entry operations, in which the operator takes information in person or by phone, there is interaction and involvement with the transaction and less chance for error. See validity checking and data loading.

Sounds like you have great (and varied) data entry experience already! Likely they stress over it and make it sound more "difficult" than it really is, is because the data being entered is the lifeblood of their business- they depend on this info just to do basic operations, that it really is a big deal! Working in the travel field must be interesting. I did the retail stuff in college- JC Penney's and found it to be exhausting, working with the public (crabby customers, especially at this time of year).

Hi Love,

The question has already been answered by some gurus here. Data entry is nothing but updating information unto the company's database. All companies are different but its still means the same thing.

It usually comes in a written form on paper and could be numerical or alphabetical,it could also be information you receive over the phone and then you simply type it unto the computer. That's exactly what you've been doing.

Enetring data into a computer application on a screen.

You will do well if you can enter data quickly and type well.

It sounds like you can already do it.
