I favor savory over sweet.

I like to make a batch of savoury meatballs - you can use anything, beef, chicken, and kind of mince, and add any flavourings you like. I do one kind which is lamb with pine nuts and I make a yoghurt dipping sauce. Or you can make beef ones flavoured with tomato and sweet chili, or pork with hoy sin sauce. Virtually any combination of flavours works and everyone loves meatballs.

If not desert, then try making a casserole with tater-tots.

Try something with those small hot dogs in BBQ

Cut up stake and put it into a savory sauce, have a lot of it.

Don't go with soup, its to messy to carry a plate full of food and a bowl of soup... its annoying to go back for that cup of juice or what ever.

Try a traditional meal that your used to cooking or something that is a family recipe. People like eating family recipes and being envious of how well you can cook.

oh... one more thing... DARN YOU!!! I am freaking starving now... I am going to go and eat some roast beef or turkey or something. Good luck to you.

I noticed that the simple dishes that are less fussy to cook and eat get the most attention at potlucks.

I always bring a simple boiled chickpea, sausage and dried chilli dish that is a sellout by the end of the meal.

Guests like to eat the chickpeas like how they would with crisps or munchies.

Try a corn chowder, or scalloped potatoes and ham, or baked beans. Those're traditional and usually welcomed. By all means, do NOT bring chips and soda - people who do that are cheap and unwelcome!
