QUOTE " The Union Jack should be combined with the Welsh flag, according to an MP who wants the change to be made to reflect Wales's status within the UK...."Changing an iconic image such as the Union Flag may appear to be more difficult to achieve than 200 years ago, but nonetheless I believe the change is right," he said.
"Let the debate begin, let the rest of the world know that the iconic symbol of the United Kingdom may change and that the reason that it will change is that we have a new constitutional settlement that affords Wales its true place in the Union."
UNQUOTE
Not before time too. !! Think back to how many WELSH troops went to the Falklands on behalf of the UNITED Kingdom? How many are serving in AFGHANISTAN and Iraq today?
What say you?

Re Mark C; ADC and Con Ranger

The flag of the United Kingdom, the Union Jack, is a superposition of the flags of Saint George (for England), Saint Andrew (for Scotland) and Saint Patrick (for Ireland). This superposition is quite intricate, and often drawn incorrectly
**********************************************
Wales had no explicit recognition in the Union Flag because Wales, having been annexed by Edward I of England in 1282 and following the Laws in Wales Acts 1535–1542, was legally part of the Kingdom of England and was therefore represented by the flag of England. (The present-day Flag of Wales and St David's Cross emerged, or re-emerged, in the 20th century: the former based on the historical emblem of Wales, the Red Dragon, and the latter based on the arms of the Diocese of Saint David's.) - according to Wikipedia

Re Steve D
The CROSS of St David could be easily added to the Union Flag... OR... how about this for a radical idea...
The Ulster Flag has the red hand showing in the MIDDLE of "St George's Flag"... SO.... why can't the red dragon be placed say in the top corner of the Union Flag..?
It's not as though I'm asking for the Red Dragon to be placed in the middle.. or fore-front and the Union Flag behind...,,
Just a thought..

Many of us would welcome the Welsh having representation on the flag as they are an integral part of the British nation.
Welsh fighting troops are some of the best in the world and as an Englishman I'm proud of them, and as a race I like them very much .
I'm just having trouble balancing that with the headlong rush the welsh and the scots are making for independance.
If they dont want to be part of the United Kingdom then whats the point in messing with the flag.
Once they have gone we will revert back to the cross of St George and can be pleased to have regressed 300 years.
If the Welsh want to be part of the Union I'm more than happy with that.

People seem to forget that the union jack is a mixture of ALL 3 flags!!!
The red cross and the white background is the St George's flag, the blue is from the Scotish flag and the thin red lines are the red of the Welsh....why do you think it's called the UNION Jack!!
They could hardly cover it in all the various animals the represent each country - would look like an advert for a Safari Park!!

Your argument is null and void, there is no Dragon to represent Wales, for the same reason there is no Thistle to represent Scotland, or a Red Hand to represent Northern Ireland.
Is the Union Jack not already a combination of:
Saint George's Cross for England?
Saint Andrews Cross for Scotland?
And Saint Davids Cross for Wales??
When a person joins the British Military they swear allegiance to the Queen, there are Regimental Colours representing English, Welsh, Scots and Irish Regiments in the Regiments themselves as well as distinctions. insignia worn on the uniforms.

I'm Welsh and I can't say it really bothers me that much that there isn't a Welsh dragon on the Union Flag. Or a St David's Cross.
But it would be nice if one was added. I think it would make some Welsh people more likely to fly it.

Lots of Welshmen and women are serving the UK with distinction and I bet they all have better things to do than make stupid, divisive, publicity-seeking comments like this. For many purposes Wales and England are grouped together, mainly for historical reasons. I blame Henry Tudor (for the benefit of any Americans, Henry VII was born in Wales).

I'm quite proud of my 1/4 welsh heritage and my 'welsh' surname.
I have no interest in the union jack flag - whether it is the 'iconic symbol of the UK' or not - but, as a historical monument, it should be left alone.
If you feel that you want to fly a flag to represent your part of the UK, fly the welsh Dragon and ignore the Union flag.

i whole heartedly agree ,Scotland,England,Wales and Ireland really are all one or should be. the flag should have a welsh flag/emblem on one side and the Irish on the other either in opposite corners or overlapping the left and right of the cross. PS.I'm Scottish

I say that it would be nice to add a touch of the St David Cross - the reason it hasn't been done before is apparently because Wales is a principality and not a kingdom.
