Or do other religions use it as well?
I'm asking this because I know of some people that talk down on the catholic path (they are some other off-shoot of christianity.. I don't know which one) but when they watch a movie about exorcism performed by a catholic priest.. they fully believe in the possibility.

They are fully dedicated to their religion and have a "every other religion is wrong" attitude like most of the people that live in my small town of only 40,000 people. Are they hypocrits? Is exorcism available to other religions?

No.

Anglicanism, several Protestant denominations, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), Judaism, Hinduism, Scientology, and Islam also practice some kind of exorcism. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exorcism

Catholics have been casting out demons ever since Jesus and the Apostles did it.

Modern psychology says that most of the people who had demons cast out of them were probably miraculously cured from schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. But their cures were still miracles.

The Catholic Church believes that real demonic possessions are rare but possible, so they keep a few exorcists around just in case.

The Church has guidelines in place to take great care to exhaust psychological options before calling in an exorcist.

For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, sections 1673: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt2sect2chpt4.htm#1673

With love in Christ.

Yes it is available in other religions. Typically and historically the Catholic Church, in my opinion, has always held steadfast in the reality of the supernatural, both the righteous and the evil aspects. Demonic possession, though rare, is real. There is an entire department dedicated to training priests in exorcisms at the Vatican. I think the reason why we always see the Church portrayed in exorcism movies is because, as I've already said, she was always held steady to the reality of the supernatural, whereas most non-Catholic denominations have developed their own opinions and/or beliefs that range from believing in the supernatural to not believing, thus making them unreliable for exorcism as they have not the training or experience.

Hope this helps. God bless.

Exorcism have been practised for thousands of years, when
there was no catholicism. The insane, epyleptic and other
mentally handicapped had been taken for being captured by
evil spirit(s). Catholics have also practised their "exorcism" with
more or less ( rather less) success, others had other kind of
rituals for "driving out" evil spirits ..... but all forgot something
very important : if you are unauthorised (non-expert) and still
practising "exorcism", you cause more harm that can lead your "patient" into a more serious (miserable) mental and
psychic state. One must be a real Good Spirit,a Loving and
Helping Saviour of his/her fellow creatures, One who is free
of any evil spirits and clearly understands the differences of
mental diseases,psychic and spiritual diseases(problems)
and is ready to HELP his fellow-humans Free of Charge(!!)
can be authorised (independently from any religion) to set
other people free from evil spirits!

Nooo way. Catholics are the only one's that believe it is as a true demonic possession, though. They take the matter very seriously, unlike Fundy preachers, who think that anyone at any time that does NOT have Jesus in their heart needs an exorcism.

These are performed all the time on a mass scale at megachurches all over the United States. Just watch late night BET.

How do I know this? I had one performed on me by an incredibly fat, incredibly Fundy minister, fresh out of prison, a couple of years ago. It was almost as funny as it was disturbing.

*** far as i am aware (and i have a degree in religion sciences) catholics are the main faith to use exorsism, there have been reports of this being used in other faiths but in a different way (ie instead of exorsising the subject they clense them or they can be reborn)

as far as the traditional ecorsism goes it is the catholics that perform this

It is a Catholic ritual. There are other rituals done by native peoples and tribes that are more in line with Shamanism or witchcraft.

You said it best - 'In the movies'...

Yes, catholicism is a major FALSE religion. Do yourself a favor and read the bible. To rebuke an evil spirit in the name of Christ needs no man-made religion- you need faith- no objects- FAITH.

That's the problem with movies. Too many people watch them and come away from what they've just seen, and immediately believe what they've just seen to be fact.
