The ultimate 'purpose' has to be procreation, but I think that in terms of people actually having sex, more people are doing it for reasons of pleasure than procreation.

Purpose of sex? Human desire.
It's in our minds that sex is required. Of course, sex exists for the purpose of creation, but if that were the only purpose of sex then our prisons wouldn't be full of rapists and child molesters.
I guess my answer, is: the purpose of sex is to feed our desires to an acceptable level.

Obviously, sex can reproduce another human being and that is a good thing. Just as good is the recreational purpose of sex. If someone tells you that sex shouldn't be fun then they have some real problems and I would run, run, run.

Ultimate purpose may differ person to person.
For believers it is a Gift of God to have a family and future in this world and hereafter.
For non-believers it is a pleasure. Alcohole makes it a perfect enjoyment. The product of this enjoyment is always a burden & liability!
