I signed on tonight and all of a sudden I was one....

I was not the night before...

So who decides or what is the criteria?

It appears to be based upon a combination of two factors - points earned and percentage of chosen best answers. I don't know at what level it kicks in, but percentage seems to be the weightier factor, as some with a mere 1000 points or so qualify.

Well, I asked this before and got some very vague answers. One of which was to try to get at least 200 pts. in the week.

However, I signed on yesterday and had lost my top contributor status and I had almost 300 pts. The thing I had less of was "best answers", so obviously that is also a deciding factor.

Note: I am still at 14% best answers, so percentage does not matter.

No one, however, could or would tell me who decides.

The same people who arbitrarily take them away from certain categories (I used to have one in Polls and Surveys...we called it the Orange Badge of Addiction). It used to require a Best Answer percentage of 10% or better, but even that rule seems to be open for interpretation.

It's not arbitrary -- there is an algorithm lurking in Yahoo's code which makes the decision. Someone plausibly opined that if you answer at least 50 questions on a topic in a month, and get Best Answer on at least 10% of them, you become a Top Contributor in that forum. This may not be exactly correct, but it is probably not far off.

Interesting...

I also woke up this morning and found myself to be honoured with the "Top Contributor" badge in History and, of course, my beloved Religion and Spirituality.

People have been asking this all day, it seems they handed out a ton of them today, literally 17 of my contacts got them about 5 lost them, yahoo seems to have gone crazy with it today. Most are not thrilled about getting one

I got mine about 2 weeks after I got here and it will not go away.

Based upon what I have seen it is a "floating award." They award it for a while and then take iit away.

Whe you rest your mouse pointer over it , it says "knowledgable in a particular category."

Me too. The answers wizards do it, it has something to do with how often you log in and how many questions you answer in the same category.
