The ancient mantras written in sanskrit were very powerful and energy creating. When recited properly they have an extremely powerful effect on not just the person but his/her surrounding too. There were various types of mantras to solve problems, invoke a deity with certain powers, help gain health and vitality and then the most powerful amongst them Gayatri used to direct your thinking in the right direction.
Mantras have following components :
1. Sound : The specific sound of mantra has power
2. Meaning (arth) : If you know the meaning much better
3. Deity : The incarnation of god which the mantra is referring too.
Just the sound itself can produce powerful vibrations all 3 combined are like a unstoppable missile :)
So even if you do not understand the meaning of a mantra but just chant it trying to get the sound right you are being helped.
People could attain siddhis (special powers) with mantras, when you had a siddha mantra you could invoke its powers anywhere and everywhere by just a few chants.
For spiritual progress Gayatri mantra is the best and hence Krishna says Iam the gayatri amongst mantras.

The only person yet who responded to you in an intelligent and accurate way is the guy right before me: "funny sam."
Mantra is Sanskrit word that means something like "focusing the mind," and that is what it is supposed to do. It is the repetition of a mystical syllable, a word, or a prayer. Hindus aren't the only one's do use mantras. Buddhists do--as do Sikhs--and Christians, among others. Recitation of the Catholic rosary is a form of mantrayana (a name for the discipline of performing a mantra--of course, in the west, we call this "prayer," not "mantra--but the idea is similar). Christian mystics called the Desert Fathers also were in the habit of mentally reciting the name of Jesus as a "mantra" and some Christians are following this tradition today.
Also it has been shown that, regardless of the word or words or sounds said, mentally reciting a "mantra" calms and focuses the mind (slows the heart rate, relieves physical stress)--and this is a good thing. It sets up a bioelectrical rhythm in the body that has effects brain chemistry and heart rhythms and generally has a beneficial effect.
Mantras also have been used as shamanic or magical spells, but we will leave this topic aside for for now.
Mantras help with spiritual progress because they focus the mind (if used in that way) on a spiritual ideal. While reciting the mantra, the person contemplates the ideal (the deity or saint or divine incarnation or whatever is the object of inspiration and devotion). In this way, the person identifies with the ideal and takes on its characteristics and also helps the mind to quiet down and drop alot of the mental noise and emotional turmoil.
To perform mantra, you are either given a mantra by a spiritual teacher or you can adopt one from any tradition (as I said, it can be a short prayer or the name of a spiritual person you are inspired by). Spend about 30 minutes a day in a quiet mood in a quiet place, reciting the mantra with the rhythm of the breath while focussing on the inner sound and on the image represented by the mantra

Mantras are integral part of the Yogas. They come under Mantra Yoga and Japa Yoga. There are several reasons why we enchant a mantra. But all leads to thee [melt and merge with almighty].
Every mantra starts with pranavam [Omkar]. Having Bija Mantra as a integral part of the Mantra, makes the mantra powerful. Any mantra without bija mantra is like a vehicle without fuel. To understand mantra you should know the knowledge of Pranavam & Bija / Seed Syllable.
Meaning of Mantra:
Mantra is a Sanskrit word made up of two verbs, Man & Tra which in Sanskrit "Mananat Trayate", just by chanting one can save himself in the universe that is achieve the ultimate goal in this material world.
Man : The person who enchants it [The person who does Mananam]
Tra : That which protects
God gave power only to one living being to do mananam. That is why, that living being is called Manushya. From the same, the name MAN evolved.

There are various fields where mantras are used: tantra, yantra and guru mantra. It depends on what you want to know more. The right use of a specific mantra by the right person at the right place and the right time is the perfect combination for someone to reap the fruits of the mantra.

a mantra is a repitation of a word or words. it can be wispered or repeated in the mind. It is usually said in isolation or sometimes as a group chant or even by some well practiced souls, as they carry on in their worldly duties. As these mantra's are repeated, depending on the mantra, one is engaged in positive energy therefore resulting in positive vibrations, thoughts, actions and so on. This leads to spiritual progress.

Here's help for everyone who is wondering what "Do or dont there's no try" has scribbled & doesnt want us all to know :
nuve na pichi dost - You are my mad friend.
ne pelli ayandi - Are you married?
nuve naku nachavu - I like you.
me andharu Pichi manashu lu - All of you are crazy people.
Apart from dissecting his/her telugu "mantras",
I do agree with the viewpoint -
that mantras are effective only when they are chanted with understanding and wisdom. The summary of a mantra has to be in our mind as we chant it, the phal of the mantra must be conceptualized as we chant it.
I give a thumbs Up to the Great Telugu Priest.

Mantras are crutches for such aspirants, who feel they are not strong enough to reach release without an external help. One can consider it a sort of auto suggestion to egg one on the way to salvation.
After a while, when they have progressed a bit, they will by themselves drop the crutches by the wayside and stride forward on their own.

Mantra told me a lot about spiritual progress. It told me dont speak of anyone at thier back , if you have to speak on thier face.Mantra told me keep no hatred and no prejudice against anyone. Mantra taught me that dont use cheap ways of expressing your frustration like decieving , manipulating and back biting.
