Well, I do this powerlifting program that is meant to get you strong in a short period of time. I've been doing it for quite a while now and I've noticed some fabulous gains! My raw squat has increased for 50 pounds, my raw bench increased by 30 pounds, and I'm really happy with it. However, I do understand the risks involved in too much maxing. It could hurt my knees or tear my pecs but...

Do you have any alternative routine that is a little safer but still fairly effective?

If you look at how competitive powerlifters train, it's not often that they actually do one rep maxes as their workouts. The closest workout they usually do is "singles and triples". This is because of the risks involved as doing one rep maxes is one of the leading causes of injury.

Speedwork, working with chains/blocks/rubber bands, in general keeping workouts under five heavy reps with lots of rest between sets follows a basic powerlifting routine.

My suggestion is to go to a couple sites geared toward powerlifting, take a look at some of the routines and suggestions from the big boys:

Good job on the gains you've made so far. Make sure you warm up really well and stretch lots after the lifts, take care of your joints, and consider wearing wraps for your knees and elbows to help prevent injury. And as with bodybuilding, good nutrition will play a big role in how successful you'll be with powerlifting.

Well I'll give you credit for knowing you're risking injury. You're driving a car blindfolded at 100 MPH. You might make it for a while but sooner or later you'll have a problem. If you rip a muscle off the bone, you'll need surgery to repair it and probably put yourself out of the game for a year. Taking with it all your gains and possibly taking you out of the gym for good. Try talking with a strength training coach or personal trainer before you blow yourself out of the game...good luck
