Pretty much, all you can do is chase it, or at least chase it with a net.

If youre not in a hurry, just wait till it gets dark. This is the best way. Chickens cant see very well at night and become very dumb. Take notice of where it roosts at night and sneak up behind it after dark and grab it, holding the wings down with one hand and the legs with the other hand.

If you need to catch it during the day, there are definatley some things to mention. You can use your bare hands or a net. The trick is not to scare the chicken by madly chasing it all over the place. Chickens, when scared, will often wedge themselves into small places where it is very difficult to get them out and they will stay there all day. They can also run very fast, fly into trees, and over fences.

Slowly approach the chicken, talking gently and showing to intention to grab. Distract it with food first. Then you have to be really really fast and sudden with your hands. Reach from above or behind and put your hands in front of the bird so it cant run forward. You can also grab the tail (firmly, so feathers dont come out) or the leg, but not the neck or wing. Those are more fragile parts of a chicken and are likely to be injured if handled rough. This all has to be done very fast. If you dont succeed, come back later after the hen has calmed down and try again, or...

Chase the chicken around until it gets tired. They wear out eventually. Try to chase it into a corner by anticipating the hen's moves. Just make sure it dosent find a hiding place where you cant get to it.

Hope you catch your chicken!

I bought my first chicken when I was 9, and ever since then I've been chasing around my hens and roosters in my garden. The most obvious thing I discovered was that it is extremely difficult to catch a free-roaming chicken in a vast area merely by foot, and over the years I figured that using a chicken cage (we have really useful-shaped ones here in Indonesia) helps alot. I place the cage in a narrow spot and chase the chickens towards there. Sometimes they're smart enough to get out of it and flee, but most of the time they get stuck in there and I just go and snatch it. And yes, if you want to carry it securely, you hold it by the legs.

Don't think you need any more suggestions on catching a hen.I rear free range poultry & entice the birds in by scattering grain inside the hen house as bait, that makes it very easy to catch within four walls.

I know, I know I know. I gots experience.

At the ripe old age of 9 I was visiting my Aunt Ida Lee in Dyer, Tennessee. She had a hen house and some 25 families coming down for a family reunion and her contribution for the food was to have Southern Fried Chicken. This NORMALLY means that you need a chicken-at least you did in 1955.

Anyway, I was given the chore of "ketchin the hen" as it were. So, with flashlight in hand and my Aunt Ida Lee in tow with a hatchet, off to the hen house we went.

It was a Dark and Stormy night as we approached the decrepit old building holding all dem feathers. Once at the door I carefully opened the latch and eased the door open all the while keeping that light on the first perch position in the hen house cause this be's where da big Booster Rooster sets all de time.

Then, moving the light SLOWLY to his right, we's sees the object of our delight, a big ole fat roastin' hen. Why, she musta been at least 5 lbs ifin she was an ounce.

keepin the light shinnin' directly on her eye to keep her blinded, I carefully moved my right hand to just in front of her legs and then GRABBED her feet and hung on for dear life as every chicken, rooster, and cyclone in the house went after me with a vengence. We got out of the house with the hen a floppin' like a Mad Hatter-or worse maybe, even an old wet hen.

I took her over to the chopping block and my Aunt gave her the old once over like she was Lizzy Borden or sumptin'

I let the hen go and she danced a Southern Jig all across that barn yard for maybe 2 minutes or so and finally ran out of ethanol. (they eat a lot of corn you know) and my Aunt then put her in hot boiling water and snatched dem feather off her so fast it looked like a pillow fight was gonin' on.

The next day, there on the front lawn on one of the many white, cloth covered food tables, sat a platter of golden brown Southern Fried Chicken---And I heelped.

Haven't been able able to go into a Kentucky Fried Chicken house since.

Grab it by the feet and turn it upside down to carry it.
BTW, chickens are one of the dumbest animals in the world. If you can't outsmart it enough to corner it and grab its legs, you don't deserve to eat it.
