They DO NOT need more than 10 hours. In fact, if they get too much sleep, their body will have had too much rest (yes, there is such a thing) and be tired the next day.
An eight year old child only needs about 8 hours of sleep. As they progress toward teenage years, they need about 9 hours each night.

Avg time a human needs to sleep is minimum of 6 - 8 hours. But those stats are more on an older based group.
You will need about 8-9 for an 8 year old. Also, Psychologists say that taking a nap mid day is healthy for the mind. Whether you do it or not is your choice... when do we have time to take a 30 minute or 2 hour nap?
So 8-9 hours and if you can squeeze in a small 30 minute nap or even a bit of rest would be excellant. Remember that to much sleep can be just as unhealthy as to little... but thats like 14 -18 hours a day.

School-Age Children and Preteens
Kids ages 6 to 9 need about 10 hours of sleep a night. Bedtime difficulties can arise at this age from a child's need for private time with parents, without siblings around. Try to make a little private time just before bedtime and use it to share confidences and have small discussions, which will also prepare your child for sleep.
Children ages 10 to 12 need a little over 9 hours of shuteye a night. But it's up to parents to judge the exact amount of rest their children need and see that they're in bed in time for sufficient sleep.
Lack of sleep for kids can cause irritable or hyper types of behavior and can also make a condition like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) worse.
