1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB versio, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption). Improved cooling system.
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played.

It depends on which PS3 you buy. There are some PS3 versions that are not compatible with PS2 games. My 60 gig PS3 can play PS1 and PS2 games so I can guarantee you if you find a 60 gig you'll rest easy but I believe there's only a 40 gig and 80 gig available and I think the 80 gig is backwards compatible and the 40 gig isn't.

The 40GB PS3 has no backwards compatibility because they removed the emotion engine to cut-cost. The 80GB can play PS2 Games, but not all, because it only uses an emulator. If you really want to play PS2 games, then I suggest you get the 60GB since it has the emotion engine. By the way, all PS3 consoles can play PS1 games.

The discontinued 60gb plays most games. The 80gb plays most of the games, something like 80%, and the 40gb does not play any. For the 80gb you need to install an update for it to work, I believe this is available for free at the PSN store.

Yes it's true. And don't waste money on a PS3. If it's gaming you want then go with the Xbox 360.

60gig PS3s from outside America or Japan play limited PS2 games which increase with each update.
40gig PS3s from anywhere play no PS2 games and never will.
