The same as a resident from Rome and or the same as in San Francisco or New York if... you walk around with your bag or back pack open, or your head in the air. The best place to get hit is on the subway or on a crowded bus or in crowds in general. The trick used is to bump into you from the front and push you back against the buddy who deftly picks your pocket. Another is the team of Gypsies... the kids overwhelm you and you get confused or charmed and then taken for a sucker. Another Gypsies trick is to hold a newspaper in front of you and the hand goes under the paper and into your bag.
TIPS:
+ Don't go out with a wallet - put the cash you'll use for the day in your front pocket along with maybe two credit cards.
+Use a back pack or bag to carry your stuff... but keep your monies in your pocket.
+Leave all valuables in the hotel safe.... keep a photo copy of your passport in your day bag and the original in the hotel safe.
+Don't wear a Rolex. The moment you get to Rome look around for one of those 10 Euro watches.... Did you know that in Naples people no longer walk around with expensive watches because everyone was sick and tired of getting held up. The same for Rome.
+Keep your hotel's business card with you in case you get lost. It's not unusual for one to forget the name or location of his hotel (the are at least 7 Holiday Inn's in Rome!).
+Do not give money to beggers - look at them... many of them are overweight! Don't open your wallet to give anyone a thin dime. You'll just let your guard down. And remember that that chump change you have in your pocket may add up to 15 bucks easily!

Like the others have said, about the same as any major city. I have been to Rome 3 times and the only problems I have ever had were from Gypsies. They are usually in the crowded areas, or on the crowded bus routes. With them it is not as much the shifty looking adults that you have to worry about, it is the kids! The adults are usually the distraction while the kids will try to get in your pockets! Overall, I still feel really safe in Rome, though I have never been to any of the "bad" neighborhoods. My wife and I were just there in August 07 and we went walking at night, even went down the back streets and we never felt unsafe. Given, I am a big guy (6'4") so I tower over most locals, but I did not notice any shady people. I would say that if you keep only small amounts of cash on you, carry a messenger type bag with a flap you can secure and a strap you can sling over your neck and shoulder with the flap on the bag toward your body, you will be safe in most areas. This time around, we had no issues with pickpockets. We also went to Naples, Florence, Venice, and Capri this trip and had no problems. I was more worried about Naples then I was Rome, but despite the warnings from our tour guide, we had no problems there either.

A lot if you're not using common sense but just a few or none if you stay with open eyes, you avoid to walk alone in dark streets, you stay away from groups of unknown people, you beware of children asking for charity, etc.- I don't feel that's really too different from other worldwide large towns (I've been pick pocketed once in my life and I was in NYC...!!)
In Rome there are a lot of Gypsies mainly in the crowded places but what's important you're not acting as a naive tourist. Don't wear costly watches or jewels, don't take with you large amounts in cash ( use credit cards instead ,Diner's, American Express, Visa, etc. are all welcome here).
You'll be perfectly safe. And if you want to be safer buy a satchel with straps where to put all yr values and wear it like a belt. Keep yr valuables just on yr belly and nobody will have the chance to rob anything from it.

No more than in any other large city in the world. Just be sure not to flash your cash and credit cards and don't put your wallet in your pocket. Watch your environment and be careful of people bumping into you.
The two places where people I know were robbed were in St. Peter's Square and I know several people who were pick pocketed there and on the train. On the train you need to make sure you keep at least one hand free and pay attention to who is around you even when you are looking for your seat.

the same as in any other country.
I can assure you that i am also half italian, i travel to Italy sooften, nothing happened to me, never, even in Naples as it is considered a dangerous city.
In Rome there are many immigrants, especially in Trastevere,or in the centre, area Pantheon, but you ll not face any problem at all if you are careful
