I have been thinking about this for awhile now and figured I would ask you all. If one believes the bible to be fallible, how can God judge one on a distorted and incorrect book. Fallibility would mean we would not know which parts were true and which parts were tampered with. Because of this, how could God judge us on the salvation doctrine if that too might be tampered with? I would love to get some answers on this one, Thanks!

I can tell by a couple answers my question must not be clear. I believe the bible to be infallible (without error) My question was to Christians who felt the bible may have errors and is fallible (with errors) and if they believe that; how they feel a person can be judged on a book that has untruth or distortion.

Jim: We understand what God expects from us through Christ. We learn of Christ initially through the pages in the bible. So, yes God doesnt judge us on the book per se; He judges us based on our acceptance of Christ which is learned from the words written in the bible (so those words cannot be wrong otherwise, we dont know what God expects from us (following Christ) )

Where do you get the idea that God judges you based on a book?

God will judge you based on what's in your heart, and based on what you've done with your life.

And during that judgment, you can stand there alone, or you can have Christ stand beside you as your defender.

The choice is yours, and it has nothing at all to do with a collection of books called the Bible.

thanks for such a great question- God could not judge us if any part of the bible was fallible, due to the fact that people would not know what to believe. God's Word is the only thing that we can 100% rely on to be true in this world. So glad because if is not true, I may not be saved- I know 100% that I am- Salvation is through Christ alone- I actually knew a pastor once that I really think believed the bible was not infallible. I cannot believe it , but it happens- I too would like to know what parts they think are not true.

The Bible is not fallible. It is extremely reliable. If you want to read about it there is a book called "The Case for Christianity"by Lee Strobel. It talks about how many copies have come down through history of the Bible and it is so many more than any other historical book.

Also, I've read and studied the Bible for the last 37 years. It is a marvelous and amazing book. I will always be able to trust it and I have never found anything in it that has caused me to doubt it or the God who breathed it out through 66 men.

Fallible is an interesting word.I am not going to get my dictionary..lol! I think you are asking about whether or not the Bible is accurate??Historically? I've been told that there is more evidence that Jesus lived, (died and walked around Jerusalem afterward) than there is of Napoleon. Historically, it's pretty much a done deal. Never looked it up, though.
Like did he ride in on one donkey or 2 donkeys? That kind of fallibility? Well...what if He did both? I wasn't there...I cannot answer that one. If you want guarantees then you don't get faith.
I think the Bible is perfect. My definition of perfect is highly important here: the Bible is exactly as it is intended to be. God judging us...another interesting thought...like sizing us up?or sending us to hell?
I believe that the One who made me knows me. I believe Him to be fair and just...leaning on the side of lovingkindness and mercy. My beliefs come from my experience. My experience and study have shown me that the relationship(not religion) outlined in the Bible is the most compassionate, forgiving, loving, awe-inspiring, merciful, precious, holy, available, trustworthy relationship out there. The Bible is a tool and a guide(and I think the most trustworthy written word we have), but God is my friend....at least I hope He is.
Salvation? you mean heaven or Hell? Hell to me would be life without Jesus. I think the Bible can be quoted to promote many different doctrines...I think there were some civil war era posers who thought that it supported slavery of all things. It's a tool.
If you set your heart to find your maker I think your questions and doubts will fade with every answered prayer. I also think you'll find the Bible to be true. CS Lewis is a great example of a skeptical mind set out to prove the Bible wrong and wound up in the arms of Jesus. The Chronicles of Narnia really bring the salvation message of the gospel (New Testament) to life in a heart rending and transforming way."To enter the Kingdom of Heaven you must become as a child". I really believe Jesus said that. My heart knows He did.
Read a fairy tale...He's in there too.
Whatever you do, keep asking great questions...like the one I am long-windedly responding to...just be careful what you take to heart. May the Lord bless you and keep you.

The bible was written by man, the bible was translated by man, the bible has been passed through generation after generation by man! Of course it is not perfect, the bible is a guide, mint to inspire, and to help us live better. And at some point we were suppose to learn from it!!! But I see history repeat it's self over and over. The bible is full of war, incest, sex, violence, crime. I believe the bible was written so that we could learn from the mistakes from the past not repeat them, but when I look around at the world I see the same things happening now that happened then, So yes the bible is fallible in the scenes that we have not learned from it as much as we as a people should have!
I believe that God will judge us by our hearts.
I do not expect anyone or everyone to agree with me, but if one of you can show me where on the bible, anywhere on or in it that says written, edited and published by God, I would be more then happy to know where you find this.

Your question is moot since the Bible has not been tampered with in it's original form (we see this with the Dead Sea Scrolls) and it is not fallible. We do have different versions but the message is still the same. Salvation is through Jesus. This is clear. You are right though. God could not hold us to a book that was distorted or incorrect. But, this doesn't not apply to the Bible.

The plan of salvation is so simple there is nothing fallible about it. Read first Corinthians Chapter 13 everything that one needs to know to be saved is in this one chapter.

I was under the impression that God judged Christians by their thoughts and deeds rather than their adherence to a man-made rule book...particularly since all the rules abruptly change about two thirds of the way through it. The guy above me who states that science has never disproven the Bible needs a history lesson...a literal reading of the Book of Joshua was the basis for the belief in an unmoving earth, with the Sun revolving around it. Copernicus and Galileo used logic and observation (the scientific method) to prove otherwise.

hey, congrats on top contributor!

anyway, I honestly dont look for errors in the Bible. Its the Bible, not an english book. Many atheists point to the same old hash, like "rabbits dont chew cud" or "fourty-thousand chariots vs. four thousand chariots". Thats not the point of the Bible, and by nitpicking it, they seem to miss the big picture. The point of the bible is to address the following things:

1.Creation-that we were created for a purpose by God.
2. Jesus- coming to bring us his philosophy on how to live life as opposed to the old Testament, and dying to save us from our sin.
3. Redemption- showing us that those who have faith in God will be rewarded and that those who abandon and scorn God will recieve punishment.

As long as the bible has addressed these 3 points, it has served its purpose and any minor "contradiction" pointed out by atheists who simply read the bible in order to look for ammo to fire at christians, is irrelevant.
