My reference book states that "the poliovirus infections occur only in humans." Yet I know, and I am certain of this, that Albert Sabin used monkeys in his research. He examined their feces for presence of the polio virus.

There are no known animal reservoirs. This means it can only affect humans and therefore will stay within human boundaries. Although at the rate diseases are evolving we may soon find a serotype of polio in an animal reservoir, so there is no telling. Right now though, you're safe.
