Hi, I have a black 5 month kitten. She is very precious to me. She used to live inside our house, but she got fleas everywhere, so my parents made me put her outside. Well, it got cold here in Houston over the weekend, and I'm afraid it will stay that way since it is turning winter.

Do you know how cats take the cold weather? How much of it do they feel?

Thanks.

Hi there...you can erradicate fleas by purchasing either Advantage, Revolution or Frontline: http://www.1800petmeds.com/cat.asp?LV=50 You can purchase these also at Petco.

In the meantime, it would be best to make a warm place for your kitten to take shelter when the temperature drops by using a box-like container with a lot of blankets. Be sure to keep the opening of the box away from the direction of the wind up close to the house.

Latina, Hey, Sorry about your kitten. They have fur and a high metabolism - which means they burn the fuel they eat and it puts off body heat which helps them. It is not fun when it's really cold, but it is only dangerous if it gets at or below freezin, which probably won't happen in Houston.

If you could cure her flea problem, would your folks let her come in, again? There are good flea medicines that could cure her and on the web you can learn how to get them out of your house without buying expensive bug bombs. Then if you keep your kitty in flea collars they never get into the house badly again.

I hope you can work it out. But, at least she has you to feed her and love her, that's more than stray/feral cats get!

You might be able to put out a box or something with an old towel/pillow in it to keep her warm. It might attract other animals though. But hang in there, I'll bet you can work it out.

Google words like: flea killing, treat for fleas, flea remedy, cheap flea treatments

There are some inexpensive things to try, I read about them, but it's been a while and I forgot the ideas, I don't have a kitten anymore. My daughter got married and took her kitty with her! =) Good luck, Chica!

Well they feel it just as much as you would if you were outside with a coat and gloves etc on. They don't have different cold receptors than us! In fact their normal body temperature is slightly higher than ours, so you could say they feel it more. Cats love heat. Certainly putting a 5 month old outside could be considered cruelty - especially if she's not spayed, that would be cruel to the cat population in general, there are enough unwanted kittens around.

I suggest you educate yourself, and your parents, on how to get rid of fleas i.e get a proper treatment from a vet. Don't use anything from pet stores, it doesn't work. Turning a cat outside is no way to treat it, and no way to get rid of fleas. You see, now you cat is full of fleas AND outside of the family home.

If your parents won't let her back in the house after you de-flea her, then as the others suggest, make a bed for her under some shelter out of the wind and cold. I too have a black cat. She is an indoor/outdoor one and I am sure that her coat has got a little thicker since the colder weather has begun to arrive. She hates the rain though and spends rainy days inside, so make sure yours can keep dry.

Go to the vet and get:

advantage or frontline

it will get rid of ALL the fleas on the cat and in the house. That way you can have Kitty back in the house.

Kitty should not be out in the cold !!!

For now - since it's outside. Make a shelter with a box and blanket or rug, so she can stay warm tonight.

Well I live in Ca. but I would say that your cat is not the only outdoor cat in Houston. I would make sure your kitty has a bed maybe even get it a dog house or something. If you can get you parents to let the cat in again try some advantage or frontline on the kitty for the fleas. Hope this helps.

With all of the research you did, you never came across the second most likely reason for a cat to urinate outside the litter box? The most common one is a dirty box, or a covered one. The second most common one is a urinary tract infection or crystals in the urine - both of which are both easily diagnosed and treated - by the vet. To put an indoor cat outside when a trip to the vet is in order *is* mean, as he may be peeing out of the box due to a health issue. Actually, very few neutered males will spray to mark territory. If you can't be bothered with taking him to the vet, then a new home is in order for him, and you can enjoy your new carpet. Don't get another pet.

Tell your parents what you want for Christmas is to take your cat to the vet to be spayed and get flea medicine.

Then keep your cat indoors. For her sake. There are so many things a cat can catch: Feline leukemia, Feline HIV, distemper, rabies, cat fever, worms, not to mention being attacked by predators. Cats do well indoors.

My best friend has a whole houseful of cats, all neutered, all flea-free, because they treat every new addition to a neutering and Front Line treatments. No fleas are in my friend's home.

If you love her, please ask your folks for this.

there are ways to get rid of flees...flee collars, shampoos, advantage and other things you can get from your vet,
but if she still has to stay outside i would make sure she has a covered, soft, warm bed....maybe put something out there that smells like you to comfort her
