Wassup Yahoo! My name Greg and I got a question. Current/ Former Sailors, what has the US Navy done for you? I met a guy in the US Navy, a good guy who is 26 years old. I talked to him for a bit and he said the US Navy is great. He said the US Navy helped him manage a business in urban music and he is doing real estate. Then I met another guy who served in the US Navy. He worked at a restuarant with me and he said he did four years in the Navy and hated it. All he did was stay in Norfolk and clean, paint, and scrub decks and floors. He told me not to go unless you want to be a janitor. That was like the only negative feed back I got from anybody who was in the US Navy. I got an uncle who had a son who was in the US Navy and my uncle said his son is now pretty wealthy! Of course peoplr in the Marines or Chair Force says the Navy is full of gay sailors who get raped in the showers on their off-time but I know all that is just nonsense.

So what I am trying to ask is, from a first-hand experience what have you got from the US Navy? Is it really worth it if you are looking for a positive, rewarding change in your life? To get a real deal from the US Navy I might have to serve more than four years cuz I know you serve your first two years as an E-1 thru E-3 cleaning and stuff. But once you hit the E-5 you get a little recognition and respect and then you can pursue your career such as college and the rate you was assigned to. I dunno just curious about the US Navy becuase I think it is the best branch in the military but I may be wrong. Thanks...

I have been in the NAVY for 4 years now. A lot of the negative feedback you hear from people is because they made poor decisions either as they where joining or while they were in. Many sailors today take a negative approach to being in the navy.

I made E4 in a year and a half, and E5 in about 3. I am currently still an E5. As far as college goes like you where talking about it doesnt matter what rank, rate, job or anything you do. It all comes down to personal decision. An E1 can take just as much college as an O9. It all depends on the person.

The navy has done great things for me. Before I joined the navy I was working 80 hours a week and getting paid barely anything. Now I work 40 hour week, get paid more than I could have imagined before I joined the navy (i currently make about 45k a year). And I have traveled the world. I am almost done with my associates degree(most of my credits came from NAVY CLASSES). I just reenlisted and the navy is paying me 75k to stay in. So overall its a good deal.

Your friend that said he was a janitor for 4 years is probably because of his own choice. He more than likely joined without an "A" School and went undesignated somewhere. Unfortunately without a rating (Specific Trained Job) that is whats going to happen. Unless the person tries to strike into a rating and obtain a school. To be honest the navy is what YOU make of it. So far it has been pretty good to me.

The mission of the Navy is to: 1. Secure the safe use of the sea for the US and its allies 2. In wartime, to deny use of the sea to the enemy 3. Project power ashore (in the form of missiles, Marines, and aircraft attacks) 4. To save any life imperiled on the sea 5. To develop new weapons, strategies and tactics. 6. To deter hostile actions against the United States and her allies. The Navy is different from the Air Force in a lot of ways--focus of its activities, the fact that the Navy has more air craft than the Air Force, the fact that the Navy has older traditions than the Air Force...the fact that Navy dress uniforms don't look like greyhound bus driver uniforms...

Julias, I have gotten thumbs down 3 times in here with that joke, I love that joke.

Yes, I love the "Chair Force" comment.

My In Laws met in the Navy. They had 3 kids. My Father in Law was a Machinist Mate. Did the same stuff as a civilian and retired that 2nd time without a worry.

I have coffee with a Retired Command Master Chief some mornings. He has a good 2nd career. I could go on for a long time like this.

You get what you put in to anything. The guy that complained about scrapping and painting will never be happy with anything. He is the "It's not my fault" type. The world needs idiots. Comedy on TV would suck without them.

The world also needs winners.

Idiots outnumber winners by a long shot.

What type are you?

Good Luck

I believe in reaping what you sow.

A person who works hard at his job (including the Navy) will advance. The person who said the Navy was great to him must know what hard work is and he was rewarded for it. The other person who said don't go into the Navy unless you want to be a janitor, must not have advanced far or at the very least very slow due to his own work ethics.

Of all "jobs," the U.S. military has one of the best advancement opportunities. How many companies out there can you say that you start at the bottom and work your way up to basically anything you want to be (chef, intel, nuke, even a SEAL) and they send you to school for it too. WHILE getting paid WITH benefits (commissary, exchange, counselors, training, school,....). As much crap some people may say about the Navy, it is still one of the best job to have in benefits alone....

I love the U.S. Navy, they have ensured my freedom and everybody else's to say what they feel and that in itself is worth everything.

It depends on the job you get and what you like. I like my job and made E-5 in less than two years so its not too bad for me. I am not really big on the structured military life but my life is going pretty smoothly. I paid off all my debts, working on my degree for free, and I've gotten to see several countries. If you manage your time in the Navy right, the Navy can provide a great future. The Navy is full of intelligent people full of potential.
