Contrary to what some folks believe, the military is not the only ones out there, the Air Force may be operating the facility, but civilian contractors are the ones doing the testing, as well as the security.
EG&G is the main defense contractor there, probably the BOS (Base Operating Services) contractor. They have a private terminal at the Vegas airport for employees to fly the daily shuttle to Area 51.
Wackenhut subcontracts with EG&G to provide security.
Check out their website for job openings. www.egginc.com (only 3 openings in Vegas listed)

ALL POSITIONS require a ts/sci ssbi, which is a top secret with a single scope background investigation.
JT3 in Nevada would be the company to apply to. The TS/SSBI is a roaring pain to go through and it can take anywhere from 6 months to 3 years to complete. You can be sent to your job assignment without the T.S. clearance but your access to information and where you can go unescorted is very limited. Once the T.S. clearance is received, you can pretty much go wherever necessary to perform your job duties. JT3 is constantly looking for experienced electronic technicians and you don't have to wait for them to call you. Put your resume on one of those "job shopping" sites (like Monster) and also apply at jt3.com.
If you have anything in your past that you think might be questionable, be aware that the F.B.I. and other law enforcement agencies do a thorough background check, including family, neighbors and former employers. You are also given a polygraph test AND have a face-to-face with an F.B.I. special agent.
Advanced auronautical craft is the mission of the facility, from the Blackbird of the 60's, to the captured MIGs and Stealth craft of the 70s and 80s. Current activity involves unmanned craft....sorry no alien reverse engineering....(btw, they don't call it Area 51, that's a Hollywood designation).

You don't have to be an officer, however if you finish your med degree and become a doctor you will be one anyway. The Groom lake annex is operated by Nellis Air Force Base. Area 51 is just the name of the region in Nevada, lots of wide open desert with no one to name it = arbitrary numbers. I've worked for a couple Sgts that have pulled security there. I don't believe they would have any medical positions there. The base is used to test top secret aircraft, so unless your degree is going to be in Aeronautics, I wouldn't count on ever getting a job there.

To work at Groom Lake, you don't necessarily have to be a military officer. What is your educational background and/or expertise that would qualify you to be considered for employment at that facility? You would have to have a background security check, and it is very strict. You should have an interest in: engineering, physics, mathematics, aviation, chemistry or research. Any one of the above would be helpful toward possible employment at Groom Lake.

There are daily flights from Las Vegas to points unknown in 737's with NO tail numbers or markings. They come, they go.
The people that go are recruited. They did not respond to an ad in the paper.
Look it up on Google Earth. That is as close as you will ever get.
However........If you do make it some day...Say Hi to Elvis.

You don't have to be an officer, but you must obtain a high security clearance to work in places like that.

Well all your hopes of ever working there are ruined, Just because you asked would disqualify your chance of working there, its like saying you want to work with the president and protect him just because you asked means they have suspicion that you may want to really harm him, most people who work in places like that have so many years with the basic army/ whatever is similar to it and get asked to do it
