right above my cats right ear, still on the skull though, is what appears to be a puncture.

it happened about a day ago, and we first noticed because he seemed to smell badly.

he has since lost hair around the wound, and it pusses profusely.

he, also has a similar, but much smaller one, directly below it [[about two centimeters below]]

his behavior has changed from hyper, rowdy, and over all playful, to a mellow, almost apathetic attitude.

is there anything that can be done?

besides taking him to a vet?

Please take the poor thing to the vet...who knows what could have done it? It is very infected by the sounds of it and needs to be treated..or the infection could lead to death. My cat was bitten by something...which ended up breaking her leg. Please take the cat to the vet.

First of all, do not listen to all of the people trying to make you feel guilty. I am sure you feel horrible enough seeing your kitty feel bad.

I will throw in one kind of scold at you. If you are going to live with your kitty and not see a vet now and then, kitty needs to stay inside... ALWAYS. Not sure if he is an indoor/outdoor kitty or not.

Back to the support. My mom took in strays all of the time and we lived in the middle of the country. The closest vet was a few hours away from us. Peroxide worked wonders on several punctures. Unfortunately, snake bites were very fatal and in a short time too.

Two worst case symptoms that may be cause for panic. In my experience, snake bits will rot the flesh around the wounds. If his nose is dry, the internal eye lid is showing, or the back of his ears are hot, then he most likely has an infection.

You should be ok until Wednesday but no guarantees.

I agree with not slamming you into the ground here. I also agree that your kitty needs to go to the vet soon. You must have someone you can call that could take you.

I've taken in many stray kitties over the years. We only ever had one outside cat, and he had a very rough life. He once showed up at our house looking very much like you've described your kitty. That morning we were leaving with friends and I had no choice but to leave him in the hands of a neighbor. She took him to the Vet the next day and the kitty lived. He had a very serious infection and was given 2 anti-biotics. I believe your kitty can make it, but s/he really does need to see a vet.

In the meantime keep cleaning the area and keep the kitty as calm as possible. Follow everyone's instructions here about the peroxide, etc.

Good luck, I really hope everything turns out ok.

It sounds like a puncture wound. Since it sounds like it's infected, you need to take the cat to a vet ASAP because he'll need to get it cleaned and most likely antibiotics. My dog had a puncture wound from getting into a fight with another dog and the vet gave us liquid to use to clean the wound out daily and antibiotics to prevent infection. I know the vet is costly, but it's the best thing to do for the animal. I've waited to take pets to the vet until it was too late and still very much regret it... :(

Poor thing.....
We can't say what can be done (or give advise how to treat him), when we don't know what is the cause. This list could be long just guessing.

He needs a vet NOW!!!

He needs professional treatment and medicine.

Since you can't take him to the vet:

1) See if a neighbor can take you, (I would call ANYONE for help!)

2) Call and see if you have a mobile vet in your area.

3) Call the vet and see if they can make a house call -sometimes they do, or can recommend someone that will.

I hope it's not too late. :-(

Call around and see if there are any free vet services offered anywhere if you can't afford it - based on your description he sounds likely to die if it doesn't get treated.

You can read the linked web page for first aid treatment and do it with the cat. You can wrap it in blanket to work on it - much better with two people.

It sounds like the wounds are infected and their may be objects or debris in the wounds.

You should really try to get him to a vet if you can, if not - read the linked stuff carefully and do the best you can.

You know the cat needs to see a vet.He has probably been in a fight with another cat. Is he neutered?,because he will continue to fight and get abscesses until you either have him neutered or keep him indoors all the time.In the meantime,if you absolutely cannot get him to a vet, keep the punctures open,so the pus can drain, don't let them scab over.Clean them with Betadine,if you have it,or peroxide,at least twice a day,and apply Neosporin, making sure to get it into the wounds. Warm compresses will also help, and if you have any antibiotics on hand, amoxicillin can be used,100 mg.once a day.Good luck.

Sounds like he got in to a fight and got bite. Cat bites are *nasty*! could have been with a raccoon or a possum too...

He must see a vet. Your cat has an infection and could easily die from it at this point. Antibiotics and a office visit shouldn't be too expensive. It would be consider animal cruelty to *not* get medical attention.

Is there a local animal hospital that will take payments? or an organization that helps with vet bills?

It could be a bite from another animal, or it could have gotten caught on something. Definitely the best idea is taking him to the vet, or at least calling and getting a suggestion from them. If there's pus, it's most likely infected, which won't get better on it's own.

was he out of the house for along time before you noticed what happened? has he had a rabbis shot? you could try cleaning the wound with hydrogen peroxide then put neosporin and see if it starts to get better. my dog once had a bad cut and we cleaned it and put neosporin on it and it scabed and eventually went away, if it doesnt improve soon though i would recomend taking him to a vet because he could have a pretty serious head injury or cracked skull.
