it's not when you eat but what and how much. at night time you have to select smart foods to eat. this would be very lean proteins, vegetables and maybe some healthy fats. you should eat every 3-4 hours that you are awake. just because it's "x" time of the day doesn't stop the body from needing nutrients.

examples of healthy diners and snacks:

skinless poultry, pork, fish or lean beef, vegetables, small salad
low fat cottage cheese
low carb protein powders

not so healthy dinner and snacks:

pastas, white rice
meat and potato
processed cereals
cereal bars
pretzels

I worked with a trainer at 24 Hr Fitness, who said to eat that last meal by 6:00 pm. This assumes you're a "day shift" person who is eating an early breakfast, lunch at mid-day, and doing your most demanding physical & mental work on a day schedule.

She said that you should have your meals on a schedule so they power your activity, and most people are less active as the day goes by--which describes me, for sure. She said if I was really hungry after 6:00, if I had worked late, or couldn't get dinner by then for some reason, just to have a bowl of cereal with skim milk and fruit, something light and nutritious.

Hope that helps!

It is not about what time you eat. The reason people say don't eat at night is implying that you have eaten your max amount of calories already and the ones you ate later that night were extra, resulting in gaining weight.

Try not to eat for about 3 hours before you go to bed. If you're really hungry don't starve yourself, just eat something that doesn't have carbohydrates (so don't eat bread, rice, or pasta). Eat some chicken/fruits/veggies and you'll be fine.

a friend of mine once said as a joke "if you eat it in the dark the calories don't count" and that is about the equivalent to what this question is.
