I know they are all branches of the US Justice Dept. Which of them has the most authority and what are the primary functions of each? Can one of them take over an investigation from any or all of the others? And when exactly does the ATF actually deal with anything having to do with alcohol, tobacco, or firearms? Thanks.

Secret Service mainly protects officials and dignitaries. There is a uniform division and a plain clothes division (these are the guys you think of when you think Secret Service). They also investigate money crimes (for some odd reason) like counterfeiting. They also investigate death threats and such on the people they protect. But mostly they stand around high ranking people waiting for something to happen.
The US Marshalls are mostly tasked with transporting federal prisoners to and from court and sometimes with serving arrest warrants (I think they have a specific task force for this).
The ATF deals with firearms, tobacco and Alcohol investigations by name. But I am pretty sure they basically stick to gun and explosives investigations.
The FBI is starting to turn into more of an intelligence agency (domestic, CIA is the foreign intel agency). They used to do all kinds of criminal investigations (robbery, murder, etc.) and still do, but this role is being reduced and left to state and local police.
Here are some examples:
Police take a report for a large quantity of stolen explosives from a mining area. They can and should contact ATF for assistance in the investigation.
Police arrest a guy for his third time selling crack. They might call the FBI and hand the arrest over to them to be charged federally (stiffer sentencing).

There is alot of overlap. That is one of the reasons government wastes so much money. We have all these different agencies doing the same thing or could be doing the same thing. And all these department heads dont want to give up their power or slice of the tax dollar pie. Supposedly ATF deals with smuggling, and regulating the sale of A. T. and F and now explosives has been added. (They have a new name) I also think like the Secret Service they are under the Treasury , not justice. Thats why in the old days the guys chaseing moonshiners were called Revenuers as in Dept of Revenue. Secret Service guards politicians and chases counterfiet money. US Marshalls chase fugitives and escort prisoners as well as provide general federal government building courthouse security and Law enforcement in territories. FBI basically deals with everything else. Despite the TV shows most FBI agents are accountants. Follow the money find the crook.

The FBI is the national police force. They investigate crimes involving federal laws. The CIA gathers intelligence about people and countries outside the US. They are the international spies. The Secret Service has few defined missions. They are body guards for the President and certain other people. They provide security at the White House.

They're not all part of the Justice Dept.
ATF-customs-alcohol,tobacco, firearms,and explosives
FBI-investigates interstate crime & crimes committed on Federal properties
US Marshalls-provides security for Federal Court Houses & apprehends federal fugitives
Secret Service-provides protection for Gov't officials & investigates counterfeit money operations

The FBI deals with Federal crimes: bank robberies; kidnapping; ATF deals with illegal alcohol manufacturing and/or selling of such, illegal tobacco (marijuna) and illegal firearms (fully automatic weapons): US Marshals usually deal with the transporting of felons and security aboard all types of transportation; Secret Service has the duty to protect the elected heads of out government, including members of Congress. Yes, one of these branches can take over from another one if the investigation falls under their field of expertise. These are the basic functions of each branch.
