It means that by adapting and responding to the conditions in which we live we develop habits which we consider to be ourselves and we never get a look beyond the fish bowl in which we live.

It means that society will dictate how you turn out. For ex. today's society is very technological, meaning kids today will turn out much smarter and more advanced technology wise than their parents. Society also desensitises us to certain thing such as pornography. Today it is widely accepted in society, not the case 50 years ago. The quote simply means we are the result of society's progression. Make sense?
