It starts with the desire to know him (god).

Once the desire deepens, then comes the interest in religion and its scripts...

While following the prayers and procedures of the religion, you start experiencing expressional meanings.

When you are following the procedures correctly, god sends you a guru/teacher and he gives you the spiritual upliftment by giving you knowledge and transforming the same to wisdom.

All these you do with your senses (through sense organs).

Once you gain wisdom, you become spiritual. Slow you experience things beyond your senses.

Slowly you progress and reach salvation / enlightnment.

However it requires lots of sacrifices and purification of yourself.

You already are spiritual, it a matter of uncovering it. Become a clean mirror and you will reflect your soul's light better. I would start with the Tao, then study yoga and it's chakra system and meditations. The Bible is also good as is the study of Buddhism. You must follow your heart and remember that it takes perseverance. Down 19 times up 20. It can be the most rewarding thing in your life if you succeed. But don't fall into "follower-ship mode". Teachers, preachers and gurus can merely be your guides; you must do the work. And choose them very wisely. Never give up the scientific world. It needs to be transcended, not ignored.

Becoming spiritual largely depends on the stage of evoultuion and understanding that you have reached through your past life times. All those who seek basic questions of purpose and meaning of existence and how to get liberated and who work in this direction are spiritually inclined people and are favorites of GOD and sooner or later they may receive the ultimate knowledge of Truth. Spiritualism is best learnt through continuously striving to know the reason of ones existence.

Most of us are at a position where we can neither accept nor reject God or concept of God. How do we get answers to basic fundamental questions such as Who is God? Is God a mere concept for physically and mentally weak people? Why so many miseries in the life? What is the purpose of this life? Why death? What is death? What after death? Why is God so imperfect? Why God is creating problems for all of us? What is the source of this universe and who has made the Nature? Is everything pre-destined? What is the role of free-will? What is religion and rituals? Every religious man has their own conviction, then who is right and who is wrong? What is the definition of right and wrong? Why blood-shed on the name of religion? How do we meditate and get peace?

And most vital question is - who is asking all these questions? Who am I? What is my true nature? What is my origin and the final destination?

In order to get the answers to these valid questions, one has to step out of own material self and start contemplating upon these questions.

Tips -

1. Mirror of consciousness will not reveal anything if it is covered with past dust of pseudo spiritualism and material logic, which is based upon five imperfect senses and relativity.

2. In spiritualism, logic is good to some extent, but after that it becomes a barrier.

3. Mind is clever and always tries to consolidate answers for it’s convenience. Have quest for knowledge and live with questions.

4. Have a non-critical, unbiased and inventive mind of a scientist. Prior to an invention, a scientist doesn’t have any logic to prove his work, but even then he is fully dedicated and committed to his work, which eventually makes him successful.

5. Go beyond contradictions by accepting them, as they are different perspectives of the same Truth.

6. Scriptures reveal themselves when read again and again. Read, understand, integrate and then implement.

7. Tons of reading is better than an ounce of practice. Theory is supplementary to practical. To quench the thirst, water is needed and not the theory of H2O.

8. Borrowed knowledge can serve the purpose to some extent. Answers are to be discovered by your own self. Get rid of crunches of belief and realize the Truth yourself.

9. Be aware/awake and remember "That" always and all the time.

There are two things: one is Spirituality and the other one is Divinity. Divinity is the rezult of Spirituality.

Spirituality is to remember God. For that you need to have God's accurate introduction and the rest is easy because He is indeed worthy of full heart's love. Withouth an accurate Introduction of God you might remember the Ganges..... and you will then imbibe ....dirt ....that is what is inthe Ganges now).

Divinity is to naturally experience and express divine virtues and powers in your every thought, word and deed and is a result of remembering the one who is the source of them.

If you remember the Ganges, etc. you will become like the Ganges, etc. and if you remember the Highest Source of powers and divine qualityes .... you will become powerful and with divine qualityes.

To remember the Ganges and other human beings, stones, gurus, mahaatmas, etc. is said to be devotion. However it is spirituality that makes a human being divine. In Hindi they say: nar se Narayan banana so it is spirituality that makes us Narayan from nar.

We forget we are spiritual & are pulled towards the physical world.

When you remember it & go on that path means, you are spiritual. It is best learnt by the guidance of an enlightened Guru.

The intestified desire itself will make us find the right Guru.

God wrote you a letter and in it he explains everything he wants you to know and do right now. Read it daily. God has a channel that he uses to nourish his people with spiritual truth. (Matthew 24:45) Find them and associate with them on a regular basis. Realize that all material things will return to the dust and let go of the desires to accumulate them. Be content with sustenance and covering and follow God's will.

Wisdom. It cannot be learnt practically. True knowledge will descend directly from the Supreme Essence.

Spirituality is always there in you says Vivekananda.
For that you don't need to follow any religion, or change a religion, or read a book of other religion.
Practice your own religion with devotion, but with respect to other religions.

If you are a Hindu then read good books by Yogis, Try to meditate etc. I personally advice to read 'Autobiography of a Yogi'-Paramahansa Yogananda
