Absolutely, positively YES. Send them a birth announcement. And, you should not be the one giving the shower, a close friend or family member should (it used to be the maid/matron of honor at your wedding, or whomever is to be the godmother who threw the baby shower).

Yes, it would appear self-serving. First of all, you have to remember, people really, really hate a) being invited to, and b) going to showers.

Only if you asked them to send gifts even if they couldn't attend.

If you didn't at least send them an invite, they'd probably be offended because they didn't get one.

If you are worried they'll be offended because they did get one, you could always include a note that said something like: "I know it's probably not convenient for you to attend. I just wanted you to know we are thinking of you. If you are in the area at the time of the shower, we'd love for you to be there!"

When you send people an invitation under these circumstances, it is understood that you mean "we're thinking of you, and wish you could be here". They wouldn't feel obligated to buy anything or anything like that...although they probably would want to anyway.
