The real question is why must the intelligent share space with the low-class, the uneducated, and the pathetically superstitious? When the religious haven't been busy slaughtering each other throughout history, they have always conspired to deny human beings the right to seek greater knowledge and understanding because they rightfully fear that access to accurate information about reality in general has a way of making folks reject the ignorant and irrational lies that are the core of all religion. Thus, now is the time for all rational, intelligent people to stand up and declare the simple facts of reality:
1. The world is round.
2. The world is a planet that orbits the sun.
3. Evolution has been deemed a "theory" meaning there is incontrovertible evidence supporting as the best explanation as to the development of life on this planet.
4. Given the evidence on this planet and of the human condition: GOD DOES NOT EXIST.
5. Given the sheer lack of archaelogical evidence and/or documentation: JESUS IS A MYTH AND WAS NEVER A HISTORICAL PERSON.
Only people who are capable of independent thinking are capable of arriving at the reality that is atheism.

I see this all the time here in Yahoo Answers. These examples are extreme generalizations and are not meant to relate to all, just the few extremists who are here in the Religious and Spirituality Section. The Christian who believes that his/her way is the only way and everyone must convert and see the error of their ways. The atheist who thinks he must put down God because there is no solid proof that he exists. The Muslim who thinks almost the same way the Christians do about his/way or the highway. I see it in all the religions here in this section. No one religion has the patent on being bigoted or hateful. I am sorry to say that I have even seen it with my own religion Judaism.
The answer is really simple to your question. We can't just get along because people are afraid of things they don't understand. It is the same as being afraid of the dark when you are a child.

It seems to me that some people are hateful because they feel their beliefs are being attacked. That's enough to get anyone up in arms. Others are hateful because they think their beliefs are absolutely right and anyone who doesn't agree is either delusional or just plain ignorant. It's a sad thing really. I think we all could afford to take a step back and say, "okay, let's think about this from someone else's perspective..."

Unfortunately, that's what it's come down to basically. People will lose the natural affection that they've might've had for others and become more and more fierce as time progresses. Notice that the older the world gets, the more violent and angry the people in general on it get. It's a part of the signs that the way the world is now is due to end. (2 Tim 3:1-5)
Also, it's so easy to hide behind our avatars, block people from emailing, IMing and even viewing our questions on our profiles so it makes sense that some people would feel freer to say and do what they want to online.
I do my best to not add to the world's troubles but to treat all as I'd want them to treat me: with love and respect as my neighbor. (Mark 12:28-31)

A person might call himself a "Christian", but that doesn't make him one. You see the hateful attititudes that seep out of some of these people, and you realize that these ones are false Christians.
Those who worship God, follow Christ's example and therefore bear the following qualities : "love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, self-control" (Galatians 5:22-24)

You should see my card games. We definitely respect each other. We would help each other in time of need, despite of our differences. Thats what friends do.

probably because of boredom. Many of them like to come here just to fling insults at those with opposing beliefs for lack of anything better to do.

No new thing under the sun.
The very first written prophesy is the reason.
Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Yes we need some new categories, where kids can play, and spiritual death can be promoted, and ignorant ones can hang out.
