That's a very old joke. There are many extrapolations,in other words a whole body of jokes or a sub-genre rlated to this main one. Did you hear the one about the guy who named his dog Jesus because he was mad at the parish priest?
You could fill a small book with Hispanic humor on the usage of jesus as a mundane name.

The servant stalls time because he heard Peter saying that Jesus was coming to see him (Peter). The servant curious about Jesus and he wanted to see if Jesus was black, brown, white, red, etc, etc. Anyway, he heard bells and horns as Jesus approached Peter, and Jesus says to Peter, "Bueno Diaz".

Mexicans&Americans named their kids 'Mary or Maria' (frm the Virgin Mary); Jose or Joseph ( frm Joseph the Human father of Jesus); Pedro or Peter; Pablo or Paul: Mateo or Matthew; Juan or John; Lucas or Luke; Daniel has the same spelling but different pronunciation just like JESUS.
No offense but maybe Mexicans/Mexican-Americans are the chosen people. Nobody knows, only HE knows.
GOD BLESS! AMEN! SHALOM!

Jesus is a very popular name among all latin america, now this is the true origin of why it is:
After the fall of the great empires of the american cultures like the aztecs by the hands of spanish "armies", and once most of the population were killed and raped, spanish monks were sent to "help adoctrinate" the natives in order to subdue the minds of the natives that went by mayan or nahuatl names, some of these names still exist and are beautiful, mexican parents still put some of these names to their children, like Citlalli( it means star), Xochitl (it means Flower), Nicte (means flower too), so, these monks baptized most of the population with hispanic names and surnames, most of them had to be linked to the religion they were trying to introduce by sheer force, so they could truly destroy their original culture, and they began to baptize people with the name of Jesus, Maria (mary), Jose (Joseph) and all of their saints (they are a lot: Pablo, Juan, etc.) and the way it sounds like Hey zeus, its cuz thats how "j" its pronounced in spanish.
Spanish didnt got enough with destroying most of their temples and cities, Mexico City's Catedral, located right in the middle of the central square in front of the National Palace where Mexico's President often visits, is builded over a very big aztec pyramid. And right beside the catedral, its one big museum about aztec culture, with some parts of that pyramid in plain sight.
Got it now?

the Mexican name came many centuries after the time of Jesus. The name 'Jesus' is a Latin form of a Greek form of a Hebrew name - it was used by Mexicans after they became Christian.

It's similar to the name Joshua in transliteration so by association the name Jesus is fairly common. It means "He will save" or "The Lord Saves".

You do realize that at the time Jesus lived there wasn't a Mexico and therefore no Mexicans so my question is why do Mexicans give their kids Jewish names. (Americans do this too with names like Luke, Matthew, Mark, John, Joseph.....)
