yup. right now I have one FF window/tab open and its running 43k... thats pretty high if you ask me
now I have two open YA and http://www.flashearth.com and Its jumped up to 122K
its always been like this for me, but it doesn't really effect my performance much.
Its the plug ins that handle things like flash and other bells and whistles.
I've been through numerous updates and nothing seems to help.

Mines does that sometimes. What I do is shut it down then restart it. Who knows what's happening. But I'd rather use Firefox than IE.

Its a known bug, firefox 3.0 should fix it.
