You couldn't google this? It's surrounded by desert. Mecca is in the western part of the Saudi Arabian Peninsula near the Red Sea. It is in a tropical area just south of the Tropic of Cancer, and I googled all of this and found this out in less than two minutes.

I don't see it as an advantage to be so close to the East African rift. So maybe a Muslim will know. I clearly don't see it.
