I need to know what are symptoms of children with ADD, my daughter is making great grades. And teacher is still insisting, that she needs testing. My daughter reads and comprehends very well. She is not a speed reader, by any means. But she has a B in reading. the teacher is saying that she isn't focusing at all. I asked the substitute teacher today, whom i trust, what she thought and she was astonished! She was in disbelief, what I had said. I just don't understand this. Help me. Thank you and God Bless!

First, I would ask the teacher why she thinks your daughter needs to be tested. She is around your daughter during the day and might see things that you do not. However, she could be wrong and I would not take her word solely. If she does give you a valid reason for her suggestion, I would talk to any other teachers or aides she has, and ask them for their opinions. After that, I would certainly contact her doctor and schedule a visit.
As we found out, not all children with ADD or ADHD have poor grades. My stepson's grades were not bad at all - - partly because he was committing certain information to short-term memory to get through the present, and partly because he was being passed through, rather than worked with.
Your daughter may be getting easily frustrated in school, or impatient (both of which my stepson suffers from). He does well in the classes that he enjoys, but has a hard time with ones he does not, because he has difficulty staying focused and with the general desire to learn certain subjects.
Regardless, I would definitely follow up with your daughter's teachers and maybe even ask your daughter if she feels confused at school or has a hard time concentrating on the blackboard, and then contact her doctor.
Best of luck to you!

Hello Mom!

Take courage from those who've been in your shoes. Your instincts are as sharp as a tack in questioning the validity of what you've been told. Consider this excerpt from the book, Fearless Parenting, Raising Your Child with Confidence and Purpose. "Inventor Thomas Edison's teacher told him he was too stupid to learn anything. Popular wisdom has it that scholar and mathematician Albert Einstein didn't talk until he was about four years old and didn't read until much later. Stateman and Prime Minister Winston Churchill failed sixth grade." And on and on it goes. Consider the thoughts of these parents who overcame the naysayers in support of their children. They were able to parent without fear and your gut will guide your child to their ultimate purpose and potential as nothing else can. Imagine what these same greats would have been like had their parents been willing to embrace what their teachers had to say about them? Where would we be? Your child is blessed to have a parent who is willing to look at who they are and not just what the experts have to say about them. You go fearless one!

I don't know what the rules are where you are, but where I live they need a doctor's evaluation before the school can assess a child.

There are many children that do need the additional help, and many more that do not.

Unfortunately, some teachers like to get their most boisterous children medicated, because it makes their job easier. I would suggest that you have her assessed by your own doctor rather than the school. Chances are, he'll say that he sees no reason for further testing. Get a letter to that effect put in your daughter's file at school. That should end the matter.

it is my understanding that ADHD kids without help do not do too well at school. Go to the principal and ask for the school to access her because you should not have to pay for testing that will come back negative

She should have at least 6 of the following symptoms and they should have persisted for at least 6 months:

-often fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork or other activities

- often has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play

-often does not seem to listen to what is being said to her

-often does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores

-often has difficulty organizing tasks and activities

-often avoids, expresses reluctance about, or engaging in tasks that require sustained mental effort

-often loses things necessary for tasks or activities

-is easily distracted

- often forgetful in daily activities

If you think this is possible, talk to your doctor. In my experience, most kids with ADD have some sort of behavior problems in school. From reading your explanation, I don't get that feeling. Maybe a very detailed parent/teacher conference is needed.
