i'm trying to buy HDMI to DVI cable because my HDTV has DVI input and PS3 has HDMI output,
is this cable just for the picture or picture + sound?

HDMI will send both, but DVI will pass only picture. Since your tv only has DVI you will need to run the red and white cables in addition to the HDMI to DVI cable.

HDMI passes audio and video, but DVI is for video only. If you are using your TV alone with no stereo or surround sound receiver, then this won't work for you. DVI is intended to show you video on the screen while the audio is piped through a stereo or surround sound receiver. So, you need to connect the DVI cable to your TV, then run audio L (white) and audio R (red) from the PS3 to the audio input on your stereo.
If you don't have an outside audio source, then the best thing to do is use your component (5 inputs: red, green, blue, audio L & audio R) inputs on your TV. Component picture quality is pretty darn good.

I bought a 12 ft HDMI to DVI cable from BlueJeans for $38. I use optical cables to feed my receiver directly from each device.

Monoprice also has things a bit cheaper.

HDMI DVI will only supply Video. You will need an alternative source for your audio.

Thanks!
