Im 17 and in highschool. Im a little behind with my credits but am catching up. The problem is, my mom keeps telling me that I am not moving out untill I finish high school even if Im 18 before I finish. I hate living at home, I'm always fighting with my mom but I just dont understand why he thinks she can keep me home even when I'm legal and, by law, able to move out? She cant do that right?

Dina K,
I made some not-so-smart decisions in the past and I am making up for it now. I learned my lesson and am paying consiquences for it. If you were me, living in my household, you would not want to live here. You dont know my whole situation. Im not quitting school, i never even said I was. I actually do have a job and it does pay me enough to support me and to pay rent. I think you are the dumb one for judging me before you knew my whole situation. I mean you didnt even answer the question.

No she can't. If you want to throw your life away by moving out and not getting an education, its perfectly legal for you to do that. Keep this question and answers though, so you can eat your words when you grow up.

You can move out if you wish but honestly good luck trying to find a place to live. Most apartments won't rent to people younger than 21 without a co-signer and will rarely rent to large groups of young people. Even if they will, you will have to show a stable credit history, which very few 18 year olds have, plus you will have to prove that you make enough money where the monthly rent equals only 25% of your income.

I know this from experience. You are best to finish up high school and then go away to college. You'll be out of the house and learn what it's like to live on your own without really being on your own.

Legally there is not much to support her in keeping you at home but be prepared for her to cut you off from support if you do.

FINISH SCHOOL and get the diploma! You need that thing!
In this case, your mom is right. Get the diploma!

It won't take that long... just keep a low profile, do your studies, pick up after yourself, and do whatever chores just to stay out of trouble.

When you have that sheepskin, get a job and bank some money so you can put a deposit down on your own place.

You need that diploma if you want to get any career training to advance yourself... the community college will check your transcript to make sure you graduated.

As soon as my daughter turned 18 she decieded to move out and move in with her boyfriend. she was still in high school at the time. within 1 month she dropped out and worked. she begged to move back home and get back into school...

So to answer your question No your mom can't keep you at home, but that also means that once you move out that you are on your own.. No Mom to tell you that she loves you, no mom to put food on the table, no mom to buy you clothes.

You are on your own... think about it first. You have a lot to lose..

My daughter did move back in and did graduate on time. but there were some new rules....

Good luck with your decision....

your mom just cares about you and wants the best for you. I understand your idea may not be the same as hers. She is probably afraid that because of how hard it is to pay your own way, school will suffer. Why not stick it out till you get done school and eat your moms food and let her pay the heat bill till you get done.

Your mom is right, you need to stay home and finish high school and then move out. You must be dumb if you are considering anything else (oh yeah, that's right - you said you are behind in credits in high school...so you must be pretty dumb).
