Well, let's just say they must have had a most delightful meal of that pizza, LOL! There is nothing in pizza that can hurt them. My husband doesn't eat the crust edge of his pizza slices, so the rats get them.

Rats are omnivores and they can eat what we eat, but just as pizza is a junk food for us, it is also a junk food for rats. A bit of pizza once every, say, 4 months, would be like a treat.

When I first got into rat-keeping I was introduced to the Rat Fan Club Diet by other members of the pet rat forums that I had joined at the time.
http://www.ratfanclub.org/diet.html
It's a good diet to start out with, and then elaborate on it as you learn more about what rats can and cannot eat.

After that I also added, in rotation, the Suebee Diet, Shunamite diet, and then my own Spaz Rats' Diet.

Added a huge variety of fruit and veggies over time,
Added lab (rodent) blocks.
Added squirrel food and dog biscuits....................................
And the list just goes on as to what my rats will eat. They even get foods that I don't like the taste or texture of, like avocados, and prickly pear fruit.

Another forbidden food that many people would not think of is commercial rat mixes. These foods contain ingredients, artificial color and flavors, and preservatives that are not good/safe for rats. But, with that said, I started out in early rat keeping with a commercial rat food and kept them on it until I learned more about feeding pet rats.

Just think, whatever is healthy for you, will also be healthy for your rats. You can even choose fresh, canned, or frozen foods.

I am a rat owner and although I have not fed mine pizza I have given them spaghetti and they are fine as long as it is not an everyday meal for them and is only every great once in a while snack they will be fine. Balance it with their regular diet. I add to mines food dried fruit etc... daily and give the normal stuff I eat about once a week with the exception of veggies and they get them 2 to 3 times a week. I would stay away from iceburg lettuce it is mostly water, citrus fruits, avacado that I know of. I am including a site that has a list of foods they can eat and I would say pizza falls under etc... LOL
Have fun with them I am 42 and took mine to visit grandma LOL (I don't have children so they are mine) Now I think she wants some she loved them. I have hairless right now it is time to keep them warm weather is getting cold at night. Anyway have fun with them they are great companions and very affectionate.

They will be fine, they can pretty much eat anything and live a healthy rat life...but the best thing is to feed a regular rat diet and then add treats..I'm sure they thought christmas came early with a nice piece of pizza.

lol, so long as none of the toppings were harmful (you know like avacados or arscenic) your guys should be fine. I used to have alot of pet rats, table scraps are actually good for them in moderation! They enjoy they change in taste and texture. That said, Pizza isn't the healthiest food for peole either, so I wouldn't feed them ALOT of pizzas. But a little bit is quite ok. ;) Some rat owners actually cook for thier pets, but they'll certainly enjoy a little bit of whatever you're eating, in addition to thier regular rat diet. -Neb

Generally ,what's bad for you on a regular basis is bad for your pets, too. You are what you eat.Just this once probably isn't a big deal, but continued junk food given to any animal is bad over time.Try to teach your son what is good, put a list on the refrigerator, when I did this for my Birds, everyones food habits changed because it is no fun to feel 'left out'.It's just hard to have a carrot out without wanting one after having to take them out all of the time!

They will be fine just make sure your son doesn't feed your rats anymore. Plus you can give your rats sugary foods everyonce in a while. Just not every day.

Pizza isn't healthy as a steady diet, but it won't hurt them. It's a little too fatty, just as it is for humans.

It won't hurt them, per se. In the wild rats will eat anything and everything they can get their cute little paws on. But it's best to avoid feeding pet rats meat, as they will develop a taste for it. And people are meat!! Nobody wants a rat that wants to eat them. Just explain to your kids that rats shouldn't eat pizza because it can make them unhappy/sick or whatever you choose to say, and suggest other things that they CAN feed to them, such as fruits, veggies, nuts, cheeses, etc.
