1225 In his Passover Christ opened to all men the fountain of Baptism. He had already spoken of his Passion, which he was about to suffer in Jerusalem, as a "Baptism" with which he had to be baptized. The blood and water that flowed from the pierced side of the crucified Jesus are types of Baptism and the Eucharist, the sacraments of new life. From then on, it is possible "to be born of water and the Spirit" in order to enter the Kingdom of God.

See where you are baptized, see where Baptism comes from, if not from the cross of Christ, from his death. There is the whole mystery: he died for you. In him you are redeemed, in him you are saved.

766 The Church is born primarily of Christ's total self-giving for our salvation, anticipated in the institution of the Eucharist and fulfilled on the cross. "The origin and growth of the Church are symbolized by the blood and water which flowed from the open side of the crucified Jesus." "For it was from the side of Christ as he slept the sleep of death upon the cross that there came forth the 'wondrous sacrament of the whole Church.'" As Eve was formed from the sleeping Adam's side, so the Church was born from the pierced heart of Christ hanging dead on the cross.

1335 The miracles of the multiplication of the loaves, when the Lord says the blessing, breaks and distributes the loaves through his disciples to feed the multitude, prefigure the superabundance of this unique bread of his Eucharist. The sign of water turned into wine at Cana already announces the Hour of Jesus' glorification. It makes manifest the fulfillment of the wedding feast in the Father's kingdom, where the faithful will drink the new wine that has become the Blood of Christ.

Whereas the blood was for the redemption of the church, the water was for the imparting of the Life of God to us with its nature. This is for the building up of the Bride of Christ to match Christ as His counterpart.
Just as Eve was built out of the side of Adam, the Church as the Eve/Bride of Christ, the Last Adam, has been produced out of these elements that flowed from our Lord. Both the Blood and the Water are so significant to the producing of the church as the Bride.

i don't think that it means something specific, it was just an eyewitness account of what was seen, there is a sack of pericardial fluid that surrounds the heart, so when the spear penetrated his heat it also ruptured the sack causing a water like substance to flow from the wound.

It doesn't mean ANYTHING!! Have someone pierce you in the side and see if you have body fluids and blood pour out. That is the make up of the human body.

It is mentioned in the New Testament because it was prophesied in the Old Testament more than 500 years before it happened to Jesus.

Medically it proves that His was dead from stress. He had died physically. There is no chance that in the tomb he revived himself, or could have been revived by anyone else.

It had to do with the way he died. In that type of crucifixion, if I remember correctly, water collects around the lungs.
