Do you want a diamond? Try a Canadian diamond. They have nothing to do with the African and Russian slave diamonds. They are more expensive though, but it's guilt free.

Go with moissanite. It's easily as beautiful as diamond, but it is less expensive and it is man-made, so you don't have to worry about the environmental and social effects of mining.
Alternatively, you can get conflict-free diamonds from Canada -- or get an antique ring so you're not supporting the continued mining of diamonds. My sister won't even wear a diamond -- even if it's from a reputable source -- or even anything that looks like it because she says she doesn't want to even promote the image of diamonds.
Rubies and emeralds aren't all that conflict-free either, btw, so it's important to really investigate the stones.

What are his opinions? Is he afraid of buying a conflict diamond or does he think diamond industry is creating the hype? Regardless, tell him that you really want a diamond and it would mean a lot to you to have one.
It is illegal to import conflict diamonds into the US and there are sources outside of Africa. It's just that African diamonds are known for their beauty.
If he's concerned about the diamond industry creating hype... tell him he doesn't need to go by the 3-month salary rule. He can buy you a diamond that fits into his budget.
Good luck!

Diamonds are overrated. Go for a nice Sapphire or Ruby or Emerald. These stones are the true gems, that's why if you look on any royal jewelery piece you will see these stones as the big ones with small diamonds around them.
OR
Go with Russian diamonds most jewelers can't tell them apart with the naked eye.

Does he really have strong ethical objections to diamonds, or is he just cheap? I think he's cheap, because if he's really truly socially conscious, he knows perfectly well how to purchase diamonds that were mined ethically, and of course there is a manufactured diamond now called Moissanite that is less expensive but equal in quality to real diamonds. I question whether he even wants to propose. It sounds like he's making excuses, really stupid ones.

Diamonds have only recently become popular as an engagement ring stone.
I would have been very happy with any other gemstone. I was actually in love with sapphires, peridots, and aquamarines (not all at the same time!)
Sorry, I agree with your boyfriend....Also, note that HE is OFFERING the ring to YOU....it should be something special to you both!
this is a great site!

why would you want to wear a diamond ring when all he can't think of the conflict surrounding that particular stone!

He can buy a diamond for a store that does not buy blood diamonds. I am guessing that is his problem, and it is a real concern! Also, my friends wedding ring is an opal, and it is beautiful and she still has that whiter color! Diamonds are so traditional and common, I almost wish I had something different, but what is most important is that my husband picked it out for me!

there are plently of pretty stones that are not diamonds..
i went with a tazanite stone which is a really nice blueish purple stone.. appearlty it's going to be pretty rare one day..
Go to a jewlerly store and check out all their stones..i'm sure you'll find a nice rock you like :) thats not a diamond..
Plus I think having a different stone is more unique..
diamonds are soooooooooooo common i mean hell almost every girl has a diamond engagement ring?? don't you want to be unique and different..
i think it makes the ring a bit more special

Tell him that not all diamonds are "blood" diamonds.
Canada sells some of the most beautiful diamonds. Have him google ice diamonds or polar ice diamonds

So what is your question? I guess you're going to have to deal with it if he has such strong feelings against buying a diamond. Is it a deal breaker for you or not?
I just read your other questions. Are you sure he's not just a cheapskate trying to make it sound justified by saying crap about "having opinions on the diamond trade"?
