Can anyone explain the meaning of these passages to me? Please and thank you. We're supposed to identify which of the following this reading has to deal with: -God outlaws the killing of innocent people. - God loves everyone, including unborn babies. - God alone is in control of human life. - Christ Jesus is Lord and Life. - We must love. - God is a just God.

24:8 He that deviseth to do evil shall be called a mischievous person.

24:9 The thought of foolishness is sin: and the scorner is an abomination to men.

24:10 If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small.

24:11 If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain;

24:12 If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?

Problem isn't deciding which it matches with, but rather what the passage is saying. It's as if I'm reading a super complicated version of Shakespeare- I can't understand it. :)

I think you should figure this one out for yourself. If you are supposed to be doing this for an assignment the real growth is in determining the answer, not in providing an answer.

You know what? I honestly think that Proverbs is something that is supposed to be read daily. That's why there are 31 of them, and that's why it is so personal as to what many of the things mean in it. It leads the believer to guidance of the Holy Spirit.

I really think that's why it's there. Yes they are wise sayings, and I could tell you all about what they mean to me, but the important thing; as I believe this is the only part of the Bible where it's supposed to mean something personal to the believer, that it's something shared with you and the Holy Spirit.

I used to read Proverbs every day. I would start on whatever the day was, say if I started today I would start with chapter 26, because it's the 26th day of the month. And faithfully, day or night I would make sure that I spent time on it, dwelling with the Holy Spirit in prayer as I did. If it were any other book in the world, I wouldn't believe it to be true. But it isn't just any other book, it's the Bible.

Also, there is the first Chapter which tells of a purpose having to do with Proverbs. Like an introduction to a technical manual it lines up what we are to gain from it, as the father Solomon gave the wisdom to his children with love, I think that it had it's repercussions with God's love for His children.

1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

2 for attaining wisdom and discipline;
for understanding words of insight;

3 for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life,
doing what is right and just and fair;

4 for giving prudence to the simple,
knowledge and discretion to the young-

5 let the wise listen and add to their learning,
and let the discerning get guidance-

6 for understanding proverbs and parables,
the sayings and riddles of the wise.

7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

Like all the promises of God, we can have these things if we trust God for them, and learn what they are.

Verses 7-9 describe despicable people. People in whom there is no hope. Nothing can be done to save them. You need to note these types of people and distance yourself from them. They will destroy you and anyone else in their path.
Prov 9:7
7 He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.
(KJV)

Vs 10 - simply says not to be a coward. Trust in God and He will deliver you.

Vs 11-12 talk about a person who could have helped someone less fortunate than himself, or someone who was in need of emergency assistance, but did nothing. Afterwards, the person lies about it and says, "I did not know they were in trouble".

God warns this selfish coward that He sees our thoughts, and He knows who is lying. He will repay you for the evil you have done.

The essence of this chapter of scripture is telling us " be not
thou envious against evil men" ;

The heart of all men is evil, and at some point in time God will hold
them a countable for their sins.

These are pretty much just saying to not do sin and to lead others towards Christ and away from death. Out of those choices I would say the answer is We must love.
