moss lab? I need help... why does moss soak up water and sand does not?

Was the word "soak" used in the question? If so, I am not quite sure of the focus of this question. It could be that moss, being a plant, absorbs water through cell walls, but sand isn't living so it can't...just not sure if you phrased that the way it was on your homework.
