The Army is not COMPLETELY different from the Marines, but they are different. I deployed in '03 and '05, and got to be around them for a good bit of time. The Marines that I saw were VERY respectful of me and everyone else that they came in contact with from my unit. I could not walk two feet without hearing 'Good morning, Staff sergeant' from each and every one of them. In the Army, it is not so much that way. I could walk a mile and maybe get one or two good mornings from a Private or Specialist. The Marines also address each other and everyone else by their full rank also. They were also in excellent physical shape. The marines also seemed more motivated than some of the other soldiers I dealt with. I know I felt like dragging my tail a few times too, but they seemed to move with a purpose everywhere. I asked a couple of them where the fire was and they looked confused! Another thing I noticed was that they did seem like they were more 'shoot first, ask questions later', and that mentality can cause problems. They are also poorly equipped, using refurbished equipment from the Army, and they are payed pretty poorly for the job they do. I was told by a Sailor and former Marine that they get their pay after the navy has finished with their budgets for the year; the Marines get the scrapings from the bottom of the Barrel. The Marines are also not as family friendly as the Army is. A lot of former Marines are Army now, and I asked them why and they told me that families are treated like Sh*t in the Marines. All in all, I fell in love with those guys. They do a lot with the little that they have and they didn't ask for a lot, just the rest of our T-rats that we had left over after chow.

Derby Girl seems to have a good grasp. Just be careful who you listen to, most people haven't been in the Army and the Marines. I'm in the Corps, I'd say quality of life is much better in the Army, and disipline and training are much better in the Marines.

Your trying to compare apples to oranges.
While they both emulate military life style, they are vastly different in their attitudes towards training and appearance.

Basically the same.
Physical Fitness, guard duty, rifle range, hand to hand combat training-things to hone your fighting skills.
But you also get time off for other things to relax.
You can also take classes or mail order classes to expand you education and earn degrees while serving.

Personally, I think we in the army have it much easier.
