I have had to draw my weapon more times than I can count, but thankfully, I have never had to shoot. The situation came back under control before I reached that level.
I often hear of officers that shoot a criminal who has threatened their lives, or the lives of others, and feels bad about it. Of course, I can't say with any degree of certainty what I would do in a situation I have yet to be in, but I don't think I would feel bad about it. If I accidentally hit an innocent bystander with a shot I fired, then yes, of course. However, I would only fire my weapon to protect my own life or someone else's.
I don't go to work hoping that I'll get the chance to shoot someone. However, if some dirtbag tries to take my life and dies in the process, I don't see myself losing any sleep over it. He caused it to happen. I did what I had to do. I wouldn't go out and celebrate that I killed someone, but I wouldn't punish myself for it either.

1) Pulled it many times. Never shot anyone.
2) Never killed anyone. Did have a guy fly past me in a car and run. By the time I pulled out and got up to speed he was gone. He had to have been doing 100+ on a back winding road. I kept driving even though he was out of sight. A few minutes later I came upon a car crash. Guess who? He was dead. His car was unrecognizable (shattered to pieces). He had some weed in his pocket. Is that a reason to kill yourself and almost kill someone else? I don't feel guilty. It was his choice, not mine.

Most police officers ( 90 percent or more) never have to use thier weapon in the line of duty. It can be often drawn, anytime you do a felony stop, doing some specific high risk arrests and more.
I was involved in a shoot out early in my carrer as a back up officer on a drug burst.

1) Pulled it plenty of times... haven't shot anyone.
2) No.
By the way, contrary to the regular media hype, I don't shoot to kill, I shoot to live.
I shoot so you, me, and every other citizen can go home. If doing so keeps the aggressor from ever going home, so be it.

I have never had to pull the trigger yet. 11 years and counting. As far as regret, I will have to cross that bridge if it ever comes, but I can tell you this. If I ever do have to pull the trigger, it will not be my decision to do so. It will be the poor SOB at the other end of the barrels decision.

Shooting is evaded unless inevitable. You need not take a gun when not needed.
