I haven't cut in 5 months, and I all of a sudden, I had the urge to today. I've been stressed with work and lots of running around with errands and things, but nothing that would make me want to cut. I have been a cutter for 20 yrs and it's always only been on my left forearm. I'm on meds and all that too. I thought I was doing so well, and then the urge comes out of nowhere. What do I do? Will the urge ever go away for me?

Sadly cutting is a release for me and it makes me feel better and more focused. Sick isn't it.

Sometimes just thinking of it triggers it with me. Or if something reminds me of it. Or something that reminded you of WHY you cut. Who knows...It's a comfort zone for me. Sometimes I just wanna go back to it, and then once it's all over I'm like what the hell did I just do?

I think the urge my always come and go but you have the skills now to deal with those urges bravo for you. I think you have taken a hoooge step by getting help and staying on your meds and reaching out to someone (us) when you sense there is a problem.

You are going to be just fine hang in there be strong for yourself you can do it you have already proven that. When that urge comes up again just take a step back take a deep breath and remember you are in control. If this keeps bothering you talk to your doctor and see if he can make a adjustment in your meds good luck sweetie I will be praying for your continued recovery.

A really good alternative, or at least what worked for me, was getting a rubberband. I always wear one, and when I have the urge to cut, I snap it on my wrist. Over time, the urge has become less and less. You should also discuss it with someone, but until then, try out my method. Maybe it will work for you. Good luck.

*It all depends on how strong you are at fighting the urge. No matter how good it feels, you need to tell yourself NO... Many people with "addictions" like this are prone to think about it the rest of their lives. Just be strong, and if you need to... talk to someone about it. Do anything else that makes you feel good in place of the cutting.....*

You might never totally get rid of that thought to cut, but you don't have to act on it under stress.
Make sure you have a friend, mentor, peer, or therapist to talk to daily about your feelings so you can challenge that voice in your head.
You my also want to start a fitness program.
Here are some good ideas:
1. Do something that gets your heart rate up a bit like, walking, running, biking, and swimming.
2. Eat Whole, Organic foods like: Broccoli, Cabbage, Organic Brown Rice, Beans, Spinach, Sweet Potato, Apples, and other fruits and vegetables in their Natural State.
3. Avoid eating corn, white bread, white rice, white potatoes, candy, sodas, chips, and anything else that you already know you shouldn’t be eating.
4. Drink clean water as your beverage of choice. Avoid Fruit drinks and fruit juices (unless YOU juice them yourself)
5. Stop smoking, drinking beer & wine, and drinking coffee.
6. Get 8 hours of sleep each night.
7. Hang out with people who want to be healthy.
8. Avoid anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup.

Tone up the muscles:

1. Join a gym and get a trainer.
2. If you’re short on cash, start a light stretching & yoga regimen.
3. Do push-ups, and light dumbbell curls for the upper body.
4. As I said above, walk, run, swim, and or bike
5. Take an aerobics class, a yoga class, or some other fitness class.
6. Join the local YMCA.
7. Buy or borrow this book by Bill Pearl called GETTING STRONGER.
In the book, he describes everything you need for a great fitness plan.
8. Compare your fitness scores to other people by clicking on the President’s Challenge Brochure link here: http://www.presidentschallenge.org/misc/downloads.aspx

Mental Health:

1. Get a friend to talk to each day about your feelings.
2. If you have some money or insurance, get a counselor to talk to.
3. Learn how to meditate.
4. Join a support group for the issue you’re dealing with.
5. Ask your Higher Self (or God) for guidance.
6. Start keeping a diary or journal about your feelings & thoughts.
7. Write a ‘gratitude’ list every night.
8. Do something that makes you happy each day like: listen to your favorite music, draw, paint, write, or anything creative.
9. Do something for someone else who needs help.
10. If the above suggestions don't improve your mental health, talk with your therapist about the possibility of taking some medication.

Take care of yourself

Don't cut whatever you do. Everyone has bad days you just have to get over them and move on. Just relax, maybe make some tea grab a blanket and read. Or listen to music, anything to make you forget your day. If you are also tense take an extra long shower or a bubble bath. :)

See self harm, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris in section 16, and use the hotlines/chatsites. Medications only mask the symptoms; you really need to address the underlying cause: depression, anger, boredom, lack of self esteem, etc. Most of these topics have sections in the website.

Sorry you feel that way!
You are in my prayers!
Concentrate on something else.
Make something? Draw? Call a friend??? Is there a "Cutters Anonymous?"
Your child will grow up to be like you(?)
