What I've heard is -- when you are petting a cat and they suddenly turn and bite you, it means they have gotten sexually aroused and biting is part of the sex behavior. It doesn't mean your cat is a pervert, it's just instinct!
But what Girl in the South says makes a LOT of sense! I never thought of it that way...

I can understand, it is very hard to resist rubbing a cats belly.
He is just feeling comfortable when you pet him. That is why is rolls on his back, that does not necessarily mean that he wants a belly rub. Avoid doing that until he is very comfortable with you and rolls over often. Take it slow, many times they will give you a sign before biting or scratching watch for those, and back off. Always pet him on his favorite spot to assure him that it is OK afterwards.

Your cat does not like to be pet on the belly thats why he bit you and the rolling on his back is just a way of saying he wants to play with you and he loves you. Just don't pet him on his belly anymore. :)

Some cats hate to have their bellies rubbed. And some bite oddly enough out of affection. Just part of what makes each cat unique in its own way.

Cats don't usually like to be pet on their belly, though my cat likes it...but I start at his chest. Sometimes while petting him he might bite me & that's because they get overstimulated.

Mine do that too. When they bite, it's a playful bite. They will also bat at my hands too. They love a good scratch/rub whenever they can get one.
If your cat is rolling over on its back on its own, just pet it, and he will play around with you.

When you pet him and he rolls on his back- he's showing you his belly and that's the most vulnerable part to him- he's telling you "I trust you and I love you." But that doesn't mean he's telling you to pet him there.

In general, animals don't like to be on their backs. It's a sign of submission, and pets don't usually like to think they're not the boss. It takes some time, but desensitizing your pet to being on it's back around you (e.g., in your lap) is always a good idea.
Keep an eye on kitty! When they are cleaning themselves on your lap, they are truly comfortable and feel safe around you.

The belly might be a sensitive spot for your cat.
