When they ask. However only tell the child that asks when they ask and tell them the story of Chris Kringle. Also, tell them Santa is a fun thing to believe in and its OK to be imaginative. Its fun to pretend. Its part of the magic of Christmas. However, this needs to stay between you and them. No need to burst anyone's bubble. Make sure they know its not their job to tell anyone else.
My mom told my brother and sister the truth I think about 6 or 7 when they asked her. However with me I think they tried to burst my bubble and tell me the-at Santa didn't exist. I think i told them they were lying. I decided in my head that he was real...probably questioned if for a while, then recognized my mom's handwriting at Christmas...I never asked her though. I think i figured it out on my own, but it became a tradition I could count on and it wasn't harmful and so I allowed it to continue. I am 24 years old and my mom still puts "from Santa" on one or 2 gifts...i know they are from her but...its just the magic of Christmas and tradition.

Depending on how sensitive your child is. 8 to 10 is a good time. I was told at 10 because I was very sensitive.
Don't tell them at a young age, for they will be sad and not as excited. Also the old trick parents use is they say "Santas not coming unless you fall asleep in your bed". It helps the kids go to sleep earlier.

Usually when children are really ready to hear the answer, they will come out and ask. Most kids are told that santa is not real sometime in second grade if not before.

my kids were hearing it from school much to my disapointment, they were only 6 and 7 years old. its a shame but in this day and age we are better off being honest with them otherwise we wont have respect from them.A former friends' son was 8 when he was finally told off his mother after hearing it from kids at school and he was angry at his mum saying he was treated like a fool! kids of today!!! i have a 3 year old and 8 week old baby and my older ones, now 10 and 11 are playing along with the little one so xmas can still be magical for her, but when a child starts asking its best to be honest i think. p.s i believed in santa until i was atleast 10, its a shame how things are today, it really does take the excitement out of xmas morning for me

What do you mean he is not real? I am just going to wait until she figures it out for herself! But even then I will still put santa on her packages! Happy holidays!

Wait til they figure it out on their own. I doubt they'll be in middle school still believing in Santa.

I started studying with Jehovah's Witnesses when my kids were five and seven. I told them then, and they did not respond badly in any way.
I thought it would be this big tarumatic thing, but they were like, 'Oh. Okay. What's for snack?' I think as parents we underestimate our kids way too much!

Don't tell them they will eventually figure it out on their own. My parents never told us and when we said we thought that he wasn't real my mom would say that if you don't belive then you won't get presents eventually I figured it out but i was never told directly or indirectly by my parents.

When you give them clothes instead of toys and games. Then they'll pull a "Stewie" on you.
