If you get what you're praying for, it's usually because you've worked your *ss off to get it. If you don't get it it's because "god didn't want you to have it so you shouldn't have it" Realistically, that sounds more like "I was too lazy to go after what I wanted so I'm gonna say god didn't want me to have it". So what's the point?

Rachel, I have NEVER in my 26 years faced a problem that I couldn't handle without the help of some unseen deity. So you're telling me that even if I am strong enough to stand on my own feet I need to pray to some deity for strength and guidance....what is the point of that?

Socko, Not everything in life can be bought with money. I have many riches in my life and money can't touch what I've got. However, I do believe that anything CAN be done with work, determination and effort. I don't believe that you must pray to some deity to make it anywhere in life. My daughter was born with holes in her heart....three of them. We did not pray for them to magically go away, we took her to a doctor who gave her medicine to help her heal.
I'm speaking in abstract thought, not of physical gain, but of peace of mind. This is what is important to me. I don't get peace of mind from prayer, but from action. So I'm wondering what's the point.

It's a coping mechanism for people who can't accept the harshness of reality.
Even when people pray in a "thankful mode" (like, Oh god thank you for blessing me with this wonderful family) it's because they are fearful of losing whatever it is they are thankful for.
For people who claim they are "communicating" or "building a relationship" with god, I defy you to produce ONE SINGLE SOLITARY SHRED of evidence that you've done such a thing. When something takes place entirely in your head, then IT IS entirely in your head.
Isn't it odd how when a jumbo jet falls out of the sky, the passengers pray to god to save them, but god never seems to do squat, yet when people pray for less impossible things, god *sometimes* seems willing to grant their prayers.
You can bet every last theist in the WTC was praying as those buildings came down, along with millions watching and praying along, and yet the people were still squashed unrecognizable. Why? Didn't god care? Didn't he listen? Was the answer to EVERY SINGLE ONE of the MILLIONS of desperate prayers NO? Puhleeeez!!! 80+ floors of steel and concrete were stronger than prayers, and no imaginary god could, would (or did) stop them once they started falling, no matter how many desperate prayers were said.
What's the point indeed?

What is the point of prayer?
---------------
Why do you ask?
You have made up your mind, and you are the only one that can change it!
One (1) in a 100 million in truth can factually answer this ominous question.
The word "Prayer" is tossed around like some sort of play toy for children.
Give me this, Give me that, I want this, I want that.
It all gets a little ridiculous.
Prayer has been given to man so that man will need less getting and do more "Giving".
"Ti's better to Give than to receive."
Man needs to be highly active in building a bank account!
Prayer is the tool that allows man to build a bank account!
I won't elaborate on the correct method for humans to pray, that is not my job. Humans must discover this for themselves. That is one of the many reasons we are all participants in this highly misunderstood word called "LIFE".
Please take note that the middle two letters in the word "Life", are "if". That is where most humans are at now, they are caught up in the "if" mentality.
It's time for humans to enter the classroom and focus on the lessons they were sent here to master.
"Peace be always with you.",

Prayer is the key to the heart of God. Prayer is the only way to a real and personal relationship with God.
We find intimacy with God through communicating with Him in prayer. We go to Him in faith, knowing that He hears and answers all our prayers (1 John 5:14). We can be confident that God knows and wants what is best for us; so we ask that His will be done in all we seek from Him. Then, we thank Him for it, even though it hasn’t happened yet.
Our Lord gave us the model for prayer in The Lord's Prayer in St. Matthew's Gospel, Chapter 6.
Good enough for the Lord of Glory...good enough for me.

If you only pray to get something from God no wonder you aren't impressed with the results.
Prayer is so you can hear from God.
Hear what He wants from you.
Hear what others need from you.
Hear what areas of life you should more fully submit to Him.
Meditate on the Word of God you have been studying.
About number 50 on the list of things prayer is is time to tell God what you want.

You must be very young. All things in life cannot be had with hard work.
You write like everything in life can be bought with money.
I have a sick daughter that will never be well unless there is a medical break through.
There is sorrow everywhere you look in this world.
Prayer is where I found God. That is when he showed himself and became my friend.

Why does everybody think that God is their personal sugar daddy???? Prayer is not simply about haveing all your wants and desires given to you. Prayer is how we communicate with the Father. Prayer is how we praise and worship the Lord and build a relationship with Him. And yes, we do make requests, but we must always listen for what God's plan is.
This world is too selfish.

Why do you assume we only pray to obtain 'things'. We pray to obtain peace of the heart & the mind, to be granted strength during trails, to be given forgiveness for fault we've committed, we pray for the soul of our loved ones who've departed and for a thousand other things that have nothing to do with 'working hard'.

The point of prayer is to draw nearer to the heart of God and His will.
Prayer is not an empty check waiting to be filled out. However, there are three answers to prayer:
Yes
No
Wait for my perfect timing.

Prayer is something you use to form a better relationship with God. Prayer isn't prayer when all you do is name things you want and expect God to give you. Reward comes from hard work, nothing is handed to you. God just helps you acheive something when He feels you deserve it.
