why don't you just get her a night light or a lamp to put right next to where she sleeps? I got my 5 year old a dora lamp that revolves and it's bright enough to where she's not scared, but dim enough to not keep her up at night.

Is she scared of the dark? Then definitely go for a nightlight (or put a low watt bulb in an ordinary light).
If not, and it's just habit, maybe you should just have a chat with her, tell her that most people don't sleep with the main light on and her friends will expect the light to be turned off if she has a sleepover.

Don't think I'm qualified to answer this question as I don't have kids! but there's gadget you can buy, it's a small, dim light which is like a plug and you just plug it into the socket. It perhaps would be enough to start getting your daughter used to a darker room. Even at 9 you can feel a bit afraid if it's totally dark. I was like this as a child- just needed to see some sort of light to make me feel secure.

it's wasting electricity. other than that, i wouldn't worry.
if a nightlight doesn't do the trick, try getting a sun clock. these are alarm clocks that have a light that gradually turns on (over 30 min time) to wake you up gradually, instead of jarring you awake w/ an alarm.
you can get one that also has a nap sequence, and a nighttime light that fades (the reverse effect). you could use this, and when she wakes up, she can turn on the go-to-sleep light again.

I wouldn't worry. It's not hurting anything. She has plenty of time left to get over it and 9 is young enough for a terrifyingly active imagination. Let her pick out a night light that is bright enough to make her at ease and dim enough not to waste electicity or disturb her sleep. Some kids (I was one) get so scared at night sometimes and it really was fear and not a ploy for attention.

If it's because she doesn't like the dark, you should get her a night-light. My mom randomly got one for me years ago (of a cat, so that when I wake up I don't trip and fall over a pile of books) and even today I still have it, although I've never been afraid of the dark, still. They are nice to have.
Try getting her a night-light.

get her a glittery lava lamp or something=)
or maybe one of those "aquarium night lights"
it looks like an aquarium, with the fish swimming around, and it also lights up the room!
She'll like the light, AND the fact that it's pretty without wasting so much electricity=)

Consider a night light that isn't so bright, but still provides her with the comfort that the light provides her.
